338 arc

Ok I built a bolt gun because I had a barrel. Too slow a twist for the sub sonic stuff from Hornady (307 gr.) but I loaded some 200 gr Nosler BT bullets running a touch over 2000fps. This thing is a tack driver out to 300 yds! Wound up at 17" on the barrel in a 700 SA. Anyone else playing with this cartridge yet? If so, share your details please! Sure wish we had this round back in the silhouette days!

Will be curious what you do with it, there's not much powder in there. I like 8.6 blackout, have a few of those, but my understanding is that Hornady didn't like the fast 1:3 twist as it sheds the petals on many of the Barnes bullets, but I don't think it does on their CX, they seem to believe the twist is not a problem to be less aggressive, so the bullets don't fragment on impact. I ponder if 6.5 Grendel isn't better suited in the mini-action, there sure isn't very much powder to play with. Only, they don't do subs. I would take 300 blackout over 338 ARC, at this point, or 6.5 Grendel, both of which I have now. And 8.6 blackout with a 285-300 grain bullet is spinning like a blender on impact...but those 210 TTSXs look pretty wicked...

What's your attraction to 338 ARC? (aside from fitting in an AR-15)

The attraction was that I had a 338 barrel blank! Not sure what I will do with it actually. Can't deer hunt in Ohio due to the foolish bottleneck case law, but it makes a mist out of a groundhog! As I said this barrel is a slow 1-10 so the heavy subsonic stuff doesn't do well. The 200gr on the other hand shoot very well at 2000fps. I'm not a gas gun guy but this bolt rifle is a lot of fun! Thinking I may slide up to Michigan this fall and try it out on one of those things they call deer!

That's as bad or worse than some of the California laws on SBRs, SBSs, or even standard capacity mags, or what they call assault weapons.

If you have the barrel already, it would make sense, IMO. I have a 25" blank I got from Mos-Tek. It is 1:3 twist, just like my Faxon barrels. I have both 12" and 16", so with the 16" barrel, it can be a legal AR with mags, 10 rounds or less. But, there is a problem if hunting on public land, and that is that the Game Wardens can stop you and hunting with a <cough> SBR is a no-no. As such, I will be hunting with bolt actions, which only hold 3+1, and these long guns can even be transported across the border I hear, so it would be possible to take it with me to Idaho, where I plan to buy property.

I'm not sure that will work for 338 ARC, you should check with the Hornady guys. Seth Swezick is very responsive to email, but Jayden would probably be the one to answer. They're all great guys over there, IMO.

Kevin Brtittingham shot this from a 1:3 twist, in Africa.

I'm not saying everyone needs to take down a Cape Buffalo with a tiny 8.6, but it sure couldn't hurt. These will take down a Griz, no problem.

in my opinion if you are shooting subs then the 338 ARC is the way to go especially in a mini action.
If you are running suppers and don't mind a short action or AR-10 then I would run a 338 federal over the 8.6 Blackout or the 338 ARC.
But if you are wanting to stay in a mini action or AR-15 then the nod still goes to the 338 ARC

I know that this is an old thread but I thought I would post an update.
Again I have a CZ 527 16" barrel with a 6.5 twist. Late season I was able to take a doe at 100 yards with Hornady 215 grain flex tip factory ammunition. It had a full pass through and you could follow the blood trail blindfolded. You can see right through the deer carcass
