.308 vs .30-06

It seems like I may be reaching a bit further than I should with the .30-06. Since I odn't want to deal with magnum recoil. Maybe I should cut that 800 yards back to about 500 or 600. Also I stated earlier that I have no problem putting a 180 grain round in the boiler room at 400 yards with a .308 This was purley from a marksmanship perspective I have no idea whether or not a 308 is a appropriate caliber for 400 yard elk.

opinions are welcome

thanks

Many may argue with me on this but if all I were going to shoot was 400 yards (even out to 500 yards) I personaly would not hesitate to harvest an elk with my 308. 200 SGK in boiler, that would be all she wrote. Period! Youre looking at over 1500 pounds and over 1800 FPS at 525 yards with the 200 SGK at 2500 FPS. I have ran the 200's over 2600 but the accuracy is at 2500 in my stick.

IMHO I would rather use a bigger rifle for 400 yard elk hunting but I like yourself dont like recoil. When this is an issue, it is better to use what is comfortable than what sounds better. Just my thoughts.
