I have just started reloading and have had decent results w/43.0 grns of forget and 168 vdl hunters and would just like to hear some ideas and suggestions for load development in a 26" barrel. I also have a grendel which I am gonna reload for w/16" barrel that seems to shoot lighter bullets well.

Its vital that you provide more information when asking a question like this. What is the load for? Whats your twist rate? What are you hunting, and at what range do you expect you will engage this critter?

Killing paper? Animals? What kind of Brass? Primer? loaded cartridge length? here was my 308 load for my 26 inch barrel with a 1-12 twist Remington 700. 44.5 grains of Varget in a Lapua case with a 175 grain Sierra matchking. Loaded to 2.850 using CCI large rifle primers. It was a consistant .4 moa rifle until I sold it to build a 338 RUM:D

Just killing steel and paper. I am using Winchester large rifle primers w/ federal brass. I have shot to 400 yds and plan to shoot out to 1000 and have been told the 168 bergers will shoot with the 175 smk's. My overall cartridge length is 3.010

I'd use IMR4064 in a .308 case for any bullet between 160 and 190 grains. Track record for accuracy across all sorts of barrels with that powder's been hard to beat. 44 grains is a good starting point for any 168-gr. bullet. Maybe 45 if your barrel's groove diameter are on the big size like most factory barrels have been.

Berger's 30 caliber 168-gr. VLD hunting bullet needs to leave the muzzle at least 2650 fps to remain supersonic (above 1100 fps) through 1000 yards. Sierra's 175 HPMK's will do that leaving 100 fps or more slower. But the Berger's a better hunting bullet; especially at the longer ranges. Sierra's HPMK's may not expand reliably.

I load H4895 42.6 GRS out of my comp. rifle Lapua brass Fed 210 primers have shot CCI primers and can't tell a difference. 175 SMK's. Broughton 11.25 twist MTU contour. Manners T5A.Load shoots great. A lot better than I can. Also use H4895 for my hunting rounds in .308. Varget and IMR- 4064 also shot great.
