I'm getting ready to work up a load for my son's Mossberg 308. 22" barrel with a 1 in 10 twist. The only powder I have available for the 308 is 4046. I have 165 gr nosler partitions I'm going to use with federal 210 primers and nosler brass. If you 308 experts would like to get me headed in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. From my research 42-44 gr of 4046 is the range I should be in. Can someone confirm this? The nosler manual doesn't give 4046 as a option with 4046. Thanks in advance for the help!

Not familiar with 4046, but with 4064, we shot a lot of 168s with 42 grains up to 44 on lighter projectiles through our M14 types. The latest Army load with 4064 is 41.7 for the 175 SMKs. Their 4064 may not necessarily be the same as the commercial 4064.

We use to shoot a lot of IMR 4064 in a couple .308s with 168gr AMAXs and BTHPs. We ran 44.0gr in Federal brass going 2700-2750fps in 24" and 26" barrels. Great load.

I ran with 45.4 grains of imr4064 and Hornady 168 bthp. Federal gmm brass and primers. 2835fps out of a CZ550 varmint.

We all switch numbers around occasionally!;)

It should be 4064 as stated a couple of times above.

Here is the online Nosler Data which does show IMR-4064 as a load for the 165 - 168 grain bullets:

Enjoy the process!

Thanks for all the replies!! Thanks for catching my dyslexia! Ha! Guess I'm showing my age! The nosler manual I have doesn't show the 4064 so thanks for sending this! Makes feel better about working up this load.

The Nosler data is usually pretty conservative but always chant the reloader's mantra:

Start low and work up slowly watching for signs of pressure.

Be sure to check the COAL dimensions as they are not all the same.

Enjoy the Process!

Most accurate load ever for me. 5 shot group that measured .195
308 round in Remington 5R
44 gr 4064
168 AMAX
Federal 210
Winchester brass.

For me the old 165.gr green tip. IMR4064 was 43.3gr, win. Lr pri. Win. brass, was very accurate, not no speed demon. All rifles are different, start low an work up. 👍
