308 for shooting 1000 yds

If MontanaMarine doesnt chime in then he would be the one to pm, he knows his 308 wins! I know Bigngreen has shot the 215 berger out to 1500 yards from the 308 win but i dont recall what powder and charge.

I shoot the Berger 210 VLD's backed by a stiff charge of Varget and Fed 210 primers. I seat mine into the lands, so it has to be shot as single-shot.

There a lot of bullets that are great for taking to 308 to 1k.

Some of my favorites are the 190 vld, 200 hybrid (for paper targets this one makes the 210 vld (obsolete), and 208 amax. Possibly the 215 hybrid. I've played the 215 a bit and plan on using more of them. The numbers are purely sick! I'm getting 2550 FPS with zero pressure signs. Could go hotter if the case held more powder. Getting 2650 with the 200s and 2600 with the 208-210s, 2700+ with the 190s.

Other honorable mentions are 155 Palma, vld, Scenar etc..., 175 SMK, 175-185 vld and hybrids.

For the heavies, VV N550, RL17 and H4350 are awesome. Palma cases and gold medal 205s are doing superb.

Using a Wyatt box I'm able to seat them long and still feed as a repeater.

I am shooting 208 Amax's with reloader 17 and it will go the distance. My rifle is now a single shot due to the length of the round but I will trade that for the distance I am getting.

Here is a good reference.

I have used everything from the 155's to the 210's mostly behind Varget and 205m (Lapua Palma 308 brass) and 210m primers.

The "best" bullet was the one producing the most consistent precision and velocity variation. In my SAAMI chambers the 185 Juggernaut stood out above the others.

Three of us will be shooting the 180 grain JLK Long Tail VLD bullet this year.

I hope they treat you well!

Off topic but I'm playing with the 223 Berger 80.5 Fullbore this year. My first attempt with the 223 for T/R at 1K and will be interesting to see how they stack up against the 308s this summer. On paper I already know the answer but can't seem to not want to try!

Good luck!

My best 5-shot group at a 1000 yard match was using .284 180 grain JLK's.
Sub 4" group with a specialty pistol:)
