Does any one have a favorite load for a 300 Winchester Magnum running 155grn Berger bullets? I'm really leaning on Hodgon extreme powders.

Thanks
Matt

Most people here run heavy-for-caliber bullets in their rifles.

I shoot Berger 210 VLD's in mine, backed by 7828 SSC powder. From what I have read, the Berger 215 Hybrids are most people's favorite for the .300 WinMag for both target and hunting.

Every rifle is different, so you will need to work up your own load, using someone else's data is rarely relevant for multiple rifles.

What bullet you run is up to you and what you want to use the rifle for. If I were running 150g bullets I would look first at the IMR 7977.

To be honest, 155gr bullets are a bit light for the 300WM, the velocity is impressive, but, it peaters out quickly.
Powders like 4350, 4831 & H1000 will serve your needs.
My favourite load with 150gr Nosler BT's was 76gr of H4350. This is a max load, but, my rifle was long throated.

Cheers.

I have never shot anything lighter than 190s with a full house load, but from my experience in my Remington 700 LR is that IMR 4831 was the best powder in it with the 190s. I can never find H4831 but I am sure it would work just as well. If you plan to shoot 155s and want to stick with an "extreme" powder, try H4350, IMR 4451, IMR 4955, and H4831, one of these should give you great speed and accuracy. The slower powders like H1000, IMR 7828, and IMR 7977 are best for the heavier 200+ grain slugs in my experience, but you can always give them a go with the 155s and see what happens.

Currently, I am running 185 bergers. They group great, but for deer and other midwest sized critters I'm thinking the 155s might be better suited. So, I'll try them and if they don't perform like I hope, I'll stick with the 185s.

Thanks for the info. What velocities where you getting with the H4350 load?

Yes, also the 215 is very easy to load with. Don't think the deer and other critters will notice the difference. H1000 is very good and temp insensitive as is the new Enduron IMR 7977 which is advertised as temp insensitive. They both have about identical burn rates. Good luck

I run the 165gr Sierra Gameking now and I'm using H4350. It seems to be working well. I plan to get velocity readings this weekend, but I'm figuring 3000fps from 22" tikka t3. My best load was 69gr h4350. It'll also be used for midwestern game, along with caribou and bears this fall in alaska. maybe try the sierra bullets, the 165 shot better right from the get go than the 185 VLD that i tried first.

Light for caliber bullets are fun. I've got a 30" 300RUM and it's a 13 twist. I cook the 168 tipped sierra matchkings @3580 fps. With a .545 b.c. it's a flat shooting almost no recoil gun. I really like it. Barrel life isn't much but worth it

Do you run a muzzle break?

In 2015 I put a 22" Krieger barrel on 1939 Mosin Nagant and cut a 300 Win Mag chamber.
I shot 125 gr Nos Bal Tip moly bullets with 66 gr IMR 4166 3.34" at 3375 fps over the chrono.

My old Quickload does not have the new 4166 with anti Copper fouling and Temperature stabilizing coatings.

But if I reverse engineer it through Quickload, it is like H322 at 65 kpsi.

It kept the groups in the kill zone on the target out to 500 yards.
I got 3x3 mule buck running away at 250 yards. It stopped him in his tracks.

The woman that owns the ranch said I was the only one allowed to hunt. Later I gave her $400. She said I did not have to pay her. I told her that shooting a deer is that important to me. I am giving her $500 this year. She and I are old. We just have to live 5 more months to do it again.

If you shoot them close in, you may push the bullet beyond its design envelope due to excessive velocity (it's really a .308Win bullet). You'll get more damage, not less.

I shoot a 300WM, everything gets 200ABs. They take deer and antelope just fine.

Except prairie dogs. I let a few of them have a 110VMAX at 3850fps…that was interesting…. :D
