.30-06 AI?

Here's what I get with the 28 inch Krieger Serengeti chamber. 215 Hybrids, n560 or RL17. 9.6 at 1200 checked out. I am comfortable and confident to take shots at 600 on game off a tripod.

That combo has to hit like the Hammer of Thor!! I've read good things about the 208gr ELDM at 2650 fps in a normal 30-06, so your Serengeti is going to be even better with the 215 Berger.

Thx Bambam! Exactly what I was looking for! I sent couple emails out few min ago to barrel mfg's to confirm Serengeti chambering and your email makes it easy decision for me. Funny but I fell into 100 Peterson 06 brass recently too. Haha! Have the brass, now the hard part!!!

could someone give an explanation of 30-06 Serengeti chambering?

This is all I found and to me It sounds like some of the throating jobs I've had done where I have single shot rifles and the speed gain is from freebore. I was going to say that the Gibbs 30 is one of the best improved and if it was combined with free bore it would really be nice

Match Chamber with 1.5° Leade, Throated for 190s
Clark chambered the barrel blank with the Serengeti 30-06 reamer, print no. 9685, from Pacific Tool & Gauge. This reamer was used to cut my other current 30-06 chamber and it produces great accuracy. The Serengeti has a 1.5 degree leade angle like a .308 as opposed to the 30-06's traditional 3 degree leade; I believe this change is an important factor in getting the best accuracy from a 30-06. The body dimensions are well matched to Redding dies, so the brass is not overworked and lasts for many firings. The freebore on the Serengeti is just right for the 190 grain range of bullets, but if heavier bullets such as 210s are going to be a rifle's main diet, then a slightly longer freebore, perhaps 0.070" longer, should be specified. This reamer's neck diameter is 0.340" which is the SAAMI standard for 30-06 and works well with modern brass. Clark cut the barrel to 28" overall for good balance.

The 06 is a great round. Built a 06AI purely because I am an old Ackly fan.
06 AI with 26" Lilja octagon bar. on a 03 Springfield action it feeds great
Peterson brass - Fed. 210m prim.- 175 grn. Barnes LRX
IMR 4350 & Ramshot Hunter (both shot very well)
Also Rel 22 shot well Ran out and testing ended.
Hunter 60.1 grns.
IMR 4350 59.3 grns.
Avg. 1/2 to 3/4 " @ 250 yards.
No indication of preasure @ vel. about 3000 in my rifle.
Started ladder test 2 grains under max for 06 for both powders after fire forming brass.
on 4th reloading of brass all primmers are still tight.

We had a customer that was running 2850fps with the 208 in his 300 WIn mag.
For the 06 fans 7828 has produced very good speed for me with 180s and 200's. I load for a friend of mine and his 03 will stack them in a hole

The 30-06 is like Chevy small block. Bolt on virtually anything and it just flat out ran like hair on fire. Just look at all options and pick any one of them, it will shoot great.
The .30-06 Improved, 30* ,.. MEDIUM length, Neck,.. looks pretty Awesome to, Me !
I like, longish Necks and, 30 * Shoulders on Cartridge Designs, tho !

Check the Serengeti chamber neck against your Peterson brass. They have THICK neck walls.

Good thing I just picked up a big box of 215's and an 8'er of VV N560! I have plenty of Lapua brass. Just looking for something different than the RL17/200 ELDX load at 2900 with WIN brass.

2800 with a 180 should be easy with the .30-06AI.
I load for a couple .30-06Spr, and one runs a 175 OTM from a 24" w. H4350 @ 2870FPS, the other runs a 200.20x Hyb from a 26" w. H4831SC @ 2810fps.

I shoot/have shot several "improved 40°" cartridges, and mine all feed/fed just fine.

What? No 7-08 AI?

Thank you fraz. My primary purpose will be a lightweight elk rifle with a 24" barrel. No crazy long range shots, probably out to 400 yards. My hope is to push a 180 gr bullet to 2800 fps or better.
I think you will be good to go with the AI. As you can see by this thread the 06 properly built and fed is no slouch, but IMO an 06 AI given the same attention will out run it. And if need be you can use one of the most available rounds on the planet, the old 06. WIN WIN in my book. Have fun with this!
