I just finished my first rebarreling job and I went with .284 Wichester. I'm curious to see what your pet loads are for this Caliber. I'm proberly going to go with 140 Accubonds or 150 grain Ballistic tips. Any advice will be apriciated

I think your bullet is too light. I prefer 180gr Berget Target Hybrids. My best load to date is 52.3 gr H4831SC

Fear is right. 140-150 is to light. Is it on a SA or LA. I used 162 Amax with RL 17 behind it. Was just starting to work on a 168 Berger load before I found a LA to strip apart and rebuild. I'm waiting for that to come back from the gunsmith. Since I have the LA now I don't know that I'll shoot anything other than the 180 VLD. I'm gonna try RL 17 first and see where it gets me.

If you are using a short action with a magazine length around 3" you can expect an absolute max of no more than 3100 fps with a 140 or absolute max just over 3000 fps with a 150 gr bullet using a 24" barrel and Winchester brass. I have been shooting this chambering since the mid 80s.
The old standard set by Bob Hutton back in '63 was 57(sometimes 58 gr) of IMR 4350 with the 140 nosler partition for 2950-3000 fps IN A BOLT ACTION. I used that load to take an elk and it worked great, the shot being 300 yds. Bullet was caught by the elastic skin on offside and weighed the usual 60%. Cow expired shortly thereafter.
H4350 is a better choice as it fits better and is an extreme powder.
When RL-17 made the scene I found a wonderful load with the 150 nosler ballistic tip that worked even in the hot summer mornings in Tucson. 3050 fps.
More recently I have used the 168 Berger VLD. Finally got around getting my own reamer with my specs. OAL in my SA Ruger is 3.050" using a 24" barrel. Didn't push it too hard with RL-17 for velocity of 2835 fps. Very accurate and consistent with 168 VLDs .015" into lands.

I built this rifle on a short action push feed Winchester. The intent is a light weight hunting rifle. I turned the barrel to a Featherweight contour 23" long and it's going into a 20 ounce Wildcat Composite stock.
I have a bunch of H4350 so I'm wondering what you fellows would consider max load for the 140 and 150 grain bullets?

I've been running 180gr SMK over 55.5gr H4831. Initially it gave me a velocity of about 2850 fps with an ES of about 10fps over 20 shots with consistent 3/4" groups at 300 yards. But as the barrel has broke in my pressure has risen with the same load and the velocity is up to 2902fps with a slightly larger ES. So I'm going to retune the load once my currently loaded ammo is shot up. And I might be switching to the ELD-X bullet once the matchkings are used up. Or I might go with the 183gr SMK. I havmt decided yet.

My browning likes 52g of h4350 with 150 barnes. With the long bullets that's a compressed load. this is my deer gun and since I have a 338 lapua, 6.5/284 and a 30 338 lapua improved I never considered working this gun into a longer range shooter until reading these comments! I am surprised at some of the velocity, I will have to run mine over the magneto speed

I shoot 27" barrel 284 on long action/throated long and 160gr/168gr in the 2900/3000 fps range.

I never chronograph any loads with 180gr VLD and I can get pass 3.200" OAL. I had that rifle build more for the 160's.
I'm sure if I had that rifle build today I would change few things but don't think it would be to shoot 180gr VLD.

I don't own a .284 Win. I do own a 7MM Rem Mag. I use 160 grain Partitions for elk. They will kill elk dead. However, I'm sure that 140 grain Accubonds will kill elk as long as you stop its topside oxygenated blood flow. If you do, it'll have seconds of life remaining.
If I had to start anew, I think that I'd go with 150 grain bullets. They shoot very well in my rifle. But it's a moot point. If I get a tag next season, I'll use my .270 Win to kill a bull.
