Any of you use one? I've been thinking of building one for deer hunting. Just looking for some info bullet powder bass speed and so on. Thanks in advance.

Have had a 284 win for over 30 years. It has been rebarreled three times. Also had two others during over the years.

IMO best powders: H4350 or RL-17

With 24" barrel you can expect:

3200-3250 with 120
3100-3150 with 140
3000 with 150
2850-2875 with 160

Currently I am using a custom reamer throated for the 168 VLD. Magazine is a 3.1" Getting 2835 with RL-17

If I may make a suggestion: get the Norma brass made for Bullets.com rather than Winchester (if you can find it) or necking up 6.5-284 Lapua. This new brass is supposed to be very high quality designed to have the primer pockets last a long time. I would be using it now but I have over 400 pcs of Winchester brass (which I neck turn for my .315 necked chamber) I bought 20 yrs ago....

All barrels were Remington 7mm magnum takeoffs that were shortened, threaded and rechambered. First one was removed due to poor grouping. It was so long ago, before I took copious notes and didn't know anything about properly cleaning a rifle. Second barrel was removed with 1200 plus rounds through it. There were other reasons for removing barrel #2. I knew the reamer that my gunsmith used was not very good and had dimensions that didn't suit my needs. Also I acquired a used lathe and began doing my own chamber jobs. Last year I ordered a reamer from PT&G that had a neck that required I turn the poor quality Winchester brass AND a very short throat so I could have a 168 VLD engage the lands AND fit the 3.1" magazine. OAL is 3.050".

I would say a custom barrel should last longer than those rough Rem barrels and get at least 2500-3000 rounds if it were a hunting rifle. I read where some F class shooter got almost much and those guys shoot many in a row.

I had 284 and 280AI build using Lilja barrels finished 27" 1/9 twist. The 284 was build long action and had both long throated to handle Berger 180gr VLD. The 195 gr came out after I had those rifles build.

In prior years had 284 build short action and couple 6x284 and 6.5x284 Norma (oal 3228") and I use Laupa 6.5x284 brass. and that was also build long action.

I started loading 284 when brass was sold yellow 20rd box unprimed brass and they later had white box 284 unprimed brass and later sold 50rd bulk.

I have all 3 types of 284 brass and I do hunt with white box 284 brass and also shot some laupa 6.5x284 brass. I use bushing dies. I've never shot the Norma brass but they say it's good.

With my set up I can run over 3000fps with 160gr AB in the 284 and that's what it was build for and it is an addition to my other hunting rifles. I don't hunt with it every year and we have to draw for deer tag here in Co along with antelope tag and if I get that tag I'll shot few pd on that ranch with 284.

I've been shooting some of the 162gr ELD-X bullets this winter in 284.

I really don't have much interest in hunting with lower than 160gr bullet. If your plan on doing something on short action those might be better.

This something those yellow/white Winchester
