Howdy Brian, welcome to LRH. You might get more responses if you introduce yourself, let people know your from Missouri and your building a 284 Win. 284 is a great caliber, you going to build a long action or short. I would go long with a 8twist , so you can shoot the heavy's. What are you thinking? 😎

Long action have a 99f savage I have hunted with for years want something that will shoot the heavy's . Have thought about for years bought 30-06 110 action to use 8twist was thought on or 7twist if could find

No need for faster than 8 twist in the 284 Win.... Especially if your going with 30" like you mentioned.
I have 9's that can shoot 180 Hybrids.
That's as heavy as I'd recommend in the 284 Win.

284 cal. You only need 8. IMO a 7 twist in a 284 is to fast, I don't think you will get the fps unless you have a 30" plus length barrel with 185gr or more, then it's time to go to 30cal. IMO.

The 284 is a great round. Surprisingly i have gotten many more orders for this chambering in recent years. I would however recommend going with a different barrel. Nothing wrong with the shilen but there are simply better options out there. If your going to spend the money on a new barrel, might as well invest a bit more over the shilen price and get a legit world class barrel. The benchmark barrels have proven very good at a very respectable price point. Bartlein are what i use on my full custom Stalker and Raptor rifles and are as good as any barrel made today. I am certainly not one to push a brand name over all else, recommend best investment for your buck and in the end, you will never be unhappy spending a little more for your barrel if its from these makers. It will be worth your investment for sure.

8 twist is perfect, and the 5r rifling is what i would recommend.

i am pretty old school as far as rifle building is concerned. Have hundreds of rebuilt savage rifles out to customers, most i built and shipped in the first 10 years building professionally and i quickly learned that while the barrel lock nut system is quick and easy for barrel installs, it dramatically limits the potential of the rifle. I always eliminated the barrel lock nut system on the savage and installed barrels in the same manor as the Rem 700 which offered several advantages.

1. You use larger 1.200" or 1.250" shank diameter barrels. This dramatically increases the strength of the barrel and stiffness of a longer barrel.

2. Can bed the shank of the barrel to add to the bedding length of the savage receivers which is limited with the requirement to freefloat the rear tang for best performance.

3. Just looks dramatically better in the finished product!!

Thanks for info i will look into those i am not set on what to use just have the action . Will think about the mods you recomended my friend says it con be done we may try to di that . Thanks
