g'day from aus, first time on this forum.
i am very interested in long range hunting!
my first rifle will be a savage .204ruger for varmints
the next gun i was looking at was a Remington 700 XHR
in .270WSM, is the 270WSM a good long range gun for say pigs
and small deer?
i am not at all interested in close range hunting as i will just use my bow.

hope it made sence, take it easy fellas

The 270wsm is a nice cartridge it will kill varmints, deer and elk size game, but the bullets lack a good ballistic coefficient for the looooong range work.

If you like the WSM's, choose the 7mm WSM. Then you can shoot the 168grain VLD (bc = .617) and the 180 grain VLD (bc = .659)

Hi

The 7wsm IMO is on its last legs in Aus... The 300wsm has excellent sales figures followed by the 270 then 325wsm.

I do like the 300wsm as a great all round big deer round.

However I do really like the standard 7mm Rem Mag...doesnt kick the hell out of you and you can find the ammo nearly anywhere.

Do you hand load? If not the 7mm rem mag is a good one with plenty of ammo choices. My T3 Camo shoots under .4 of an inch.. stock factory sporter. with hand loads I must add.

The 270 WSM is an excellent choice for ranges out to 800yrds and at my elevation I would shoot mule deer out to a 1000yrds with it, even with the 140 Berger that I currently shoot. The difference between a Berger 150gr out of a 270 WSM and the 168 Berger out of a 7mm is not what everyone makes it out to be, they both make it to a 1000yrds at about the same speed. The 270 gets there with less MOA in elevation but you have a little more in wind deflection. The 7mm has a couple hundred more ft-lbs of energy.
The 270 cal bullets function more reliable than the 7mm ones that I have shot or seen game shot with, I would always take a little lesser 270 cal over a 7mm on game just from what I see in terminal performance.
If you can get your hands on the 169.5gr Wildcat bullets later this year when they come into production then there is nothing you can shoot out of a 7mm mag or WSM that will touch it in the 270 WSM.
That being said the 300WSM is a solid choice also!

+1, I like the way you think.
Im in love with my 270wsm with 140 accubonds(listed .496 B.C.) to the 6-800 yd range. I could probably push that a bit further, on deer and smaller size critters, but my personal ability hasnt caught up to my imagination yet.
The Hornady SST 150gr has a listed B.C. OF .525. It shoots quite well out of my rifle also.
Id like to see some more info on these 169.5gr. wildcat bullets.

Between the 150 SST (BC.525) and the 150 Berger VLD (BC.531) is that this little cartridge can push them very hard. With these BC's it is a legit 1000yrd rifle for hogs and small deer as per the prescribed description of hunting. Looking at some loads on Reloadersnest.com, 3145fps is the high. I imagine with some good hand loading that you will be able to push it a little harder if you want. Pushing a .531 BC bullet at 3145fps according to jbm calculations results in 24.5 MOA up, 1614fps and 868 fps. That is more velocity and energy than a 44 Magnum pistol at point blank range (300grn Hornady XTP bullet). The velocity is sufficient to open the bullet upon impact on something as hard as a hog without issue and still will cause the bullet to function on small deer. I would imagine a Dingo would hate it also ;)!!!!! The 270 WSM is proving with its velocity and bullet functioning the way they do that you don't need an uber magnum to get it done for deer size game or smaller.

You have to remember he is Australia and in remote areas the wsm range of ammo isnt always on hand. The 325wsm hasnt set any sales records and the 7mm wsm is dead in the water here IMO. The 300wsm is really popular amongst deer hunters. The 270wsm may also survive due to reasonable sales. Perhaps a 7mm RM may be the better option if he doesnt handload if he doesnt live in a major town centre. 30/06 .308 .270 win are always on hand..

In Aus the 300wsm rules and sales are excellent.. But I agree the 270wsm will do it on its ear! Just consider the 7mm RM and ammunition options if you dont relaod.

Re Uber magnum... I dont think the the 7mm is over gunned and the 270wsm would be pretty close in performance!

Actually for what you want there is nothing wrong with the classic .270 Winchester.....I do have a soft spot for that and it would be perfect for you. Its still Sambar legal

The 270 caliber will kill stuff at long range. My 270 weatherby shoots a 150 grain sst 3325 fps and I have taken elk with the 270 wby to 1100 yards. In my opinion though I think the 300 wsm is the best of the wsm's. It is the most versatile with the easiest to get ammo. My tikka 300 wsm shoots a 150 grain nosler etip .469 bc over 3400 fps. That tops the performance of the 270 wsm at ranges where the wsm is most effective which is inside 800 yards.

i think i might go the 300WSM running them through a savage long range hunter
i will be re-loading for max range and accuresy but i will cross that road when i get to it aye

cheers

Sounds like a good choice. I am a huge Savage fan. I think the Mod 11 LRH is a great innovation and addition to the line of rifles offered by Savage. I own a 300 WSM in a Savage. Mine is the Low Pro though. It shoots great. Enjoy!:D

Good call!!! I have switch all over to Savage!! I My 270 WSM is a model 12 and I can push the 140 gr to 3341 for best accuracy, which will be nearly identical to the 300WSM with a 150 gr bullet but with better Sectional Density which is what kills heavier animals IMO.

I've got a couple friends that shoot the 300 WSM for LRH and they love the 185 and 190 Bergers !!!

dont think i have ever heard of the 185 and 190 Bergers
im not real sure if we even get them in Australia.
can anyone give me any ideas on what sort of powder primers
bullets and brass i should use for best range and accuracy?

after my savage .204 comes then i will worry about the savage LRH in 300WSM
i would really like to get my 300WSM painted, a sort of bushland greenish color with skulls blended in but not to un-noticeable

Norma brass in the WSM's seems to be as good as it gets for most situations. The 300 WSM gets some good results with Reloader 17. For bullets I don't know what you can get your hands on over there but Berger is usually my first choice, and then from there I shoot Accubonds.

You may try posting a question in the Australia, New Zealand Forum and see where some others are getting there stuff.

Bergers in Australia.. You can get them from Parrabellum imports/ Vic Arms in Victoria Street Melbourne. They are the importer and most big shops know they can order them in for you.

I shot a variety of bullets...good viable options.

I use 168's in the 7mm and 210's in the 300 wthby

What deer are you hunting and what calibre did you get...?
