Don't look at me as an authority on the 264 win mag. Like I said I have one rifle chambered in it and I answered the post giving my data that shoots very well in my rifle. Maybe I hit the jackpot and have a super good one. I wouldn't know since I have nothing to compare it to. The 264 STW I have done quite a bit of work with and know it much better. You guys got me worried so I went down and got out my 50 round box of 264's and checked the loads and the primers. The number of times they were loaded and all that stuff. Bottom line my gun is shooting these very good. The best accuracy loads I had marked in the box for the 140 grain was 66.5 grains of 7828, 76 grains of H870 and 65.5 grains of magpro. The best shooting load overall was that 120 ballistic tip load I gave you. Those fastest loads I gave you show what my gun will do and still maintain accuracy though. These are all shot with remington 7mm rem mag brass necked to 264 with necks turned and trimmed. The primers are cci 250 and the oal varied a little depending on the bullet with some going out to 3.425. Some were as short as 3.250. I checked my rifle and it is a 1-9 twist.

Just judging from my data I can't imagine a 264 having 61 grains of 7828 as max with a 140 grain bullet. In my opinion I think you could easily use that starting out. Some guns get real finicky when seating against the lands but even doing that I can't see starting under 59-60 range. Hopefully some 264 shooters will get on here and report what they are doing. I have read before that the 264 was finicky to load for and was one of the things that hurt the popularity. Maybe we just found that right here.

I'll look thru my books in the morning and let you know what loads I have used in the past. I have been a big fan of the 264 as it was my first rifle given to me by my father. I now have three of them, and finally wore out my first one, and completely rebuilt a year ago. It is now my main deer rifle. It's a model 70 action that I fitted a 28" shilen select match barrel to, and bedded it in a Hogue stock. I primarily use the 129gr or 140gr Hornady SST, but I have loaded 100gr sierra HP, 120 nosler BT, and 140gr Remington Core lokts. I will say that for deer size game I have never had much luck with the Nosler BT's as they don't seem to hold together at the higher Velocities. Barrell length is also a critical factor for the 264. My 26" model 70 is right at 3200 fps for most 140gr loads and the 24" barrel is in the 2950 area. The 264 shines with the longer barrels as I can get very close to 3400fps with the 140gr SST's out of my 28" barrel. As far as powders go I have used 4350, 4831, 7828, Retumbo, H870, and now my main load is 59.6gr of H1000 using a 140gr hornady SST. All of my 264's shoot different as far as loads go so I would start with a mid range charge of suitable powder and work up from there.

Douglas chambered the .264 with a long throat especially compared to the original Winchester design. Winchester used 100 gr sp and a two diameter 140 gr in the same chamber .

I sold that rifle but will check for my loading data.
