Does anyone have any suggestions on load development for 140 VLD hunting bergers bullets in a 264 mag? It's a 1:8.5 twist Krieger - 26" barrel #8 contour. I haven't started any loads yet but I was going to start with H1000 powder. Also, I was curious what velocity could I expect (3100+?). Thanks, Ron

I recommend that you start by establishing the seating depth that shoots most accurately using the procedure outlined on the Berger website:

Once the preferred seating depth is established, begin your powder charge workup using the OCW procedure outlined here:

Hodgdon shows a starting load of 55 grains with H1000.

I don't know what to expect in terms of velocity. I just started load workup for my .264WM. I am working up loads for two different bullets and have only completed the seating depth tests for one of them. When I get the chance, I will complete my OCW workup with Retumbo. I am hoping for 3150ish w/140g bullets when all is said and done, but I don't know if that is realistic or not.

Good luck with your load development!

I don't shoot the 140 VLD but shoot the Nosler 130 Accubond and Retumbo is THE POWDER in my 264 Win mag. It has a 27 3/4" barrel and a nice tight chamber. I use 66.5 grs Retumbo, CCI 250, WW case that is reformed from 7mm Rem mag and the 130 AB 20 thousands off the lands and I average 3350 fps and 1/4" MOA accuracy. With Retumbo you should be able to get over 3100 fps with your 140 VLDs. By the way the 130 AB shoots much flatter than the numbers given for it in my rifle.

Thanks for the info as I have both of these bullets.

140 gr VLD, 68.9 grains Retumbo, Federal GM Mag primers, overall length at 3.43", 3180 fps average.
