25/06 Question

Proud owner of a Remington 40x in 25/06 with a 1-10 twist in the barrel. I'm looking for a bullet that will be heavy enough to long range shoot but that will preform well with the barrels twist rate. Right now I'm looking at 95 - 117 gr bullets. Will the twist handle the 117s or should I look at heavier bullets? Thanks in advance.

I am running 117 grain Sierra with 4831SC, but I have not shot it past 500 yards. Also shooting down a 10 twist pipe.

It boils down to what bullet design you are looking for your intended purpose. It is not for everybody, but check out the 115 Berger offering. Good luck!

What's your definition of "long range"?

You should be able to shoot up to 120 gr bullets . You won't be able to stabilize the the newer 130+grain bullets.

I've used 115 BT and Bergers on Ibex and coues deer out to 600yds with IMR 4831. If you can get retumbo to shoot you should be able to get 3200 fps and extend effective range a little further.

I've shot 117 SPBT out of a 10 twist past 1000 on paper, rocks and steel, the wind is cruel to the older lower BC bullets but if you get a good weather day I had no issue holding them inside a minute and a half and sometimes half that when the air is still and cold. IMR 4350 is what I used then, H4831 definitely makes more speed. If I was going to revive the effort to take this rifle out long again I'd start with the Berger 115.

I don't know how your rifle will behave, but all the 25-06s I have owned have shot better as the load approached maximum grains. My best recent load was with 110 gr Accubonds at the max load found in the Nosler book with 4831.

I have 3 favoured bullets for shots beyond 400 in my 25-06's, they are 115g Nosler Ballistic Tip, 117g Sierra GK and Berger 115g.
For big deer, I like the 120g Speer Hot Cor at ranges up to 500.
Still on the fence with the 101g Barnes LRX, but, it has been very accurate during testing, no animal likes them…

I've killed more deer with the 115 Nosler than everything else I have combined

I'm setting up my own 25-06 for longer range shooting basically with the same parameters you have. My rifle didn't shoot the 115 Berger well with any combo I tried. So I'll be trying the 110 gamechanger next.
Powders I'd try are h4831sc, Retumbo, ramshot grand, H1000.
Nice 40x too btw!
