.243win semi custom build?

I currently have a base model rem 700 adl 97'model in .243win. I have quite a few rounds through this gun and have taken a couple handful of bucks and even more ground grizzlies. I'm looking into making this gun into an even better long range shooter, up to 600yrds on game and maybe further on paper. I'm mainly looking to replace the barrel and maybe true the action. Being that I have a limited budget what ballpark figure should I expect for a decent barrel in sendero contour and the average fees a smith would charge to put it on and true the action? I have the stuff to hand load and have been quite successful with my .300wm, I've just never ventured down this road and have never got any work done by a smith so I'm just wanting to know what to expect. Any other info or recommendations would be great. Thanks.

I have a 700 BDL 243 that's about the same age, and done what your wanting to do, had the action trued new recoil lug and a 26" Douglas air gauge #5 installed and had it put glass bedded in a VLS stock with a little of the channel removed at the receiver and a timmny trigger, and it all depends on the smith you use as to what he charges, I have about $600 in the gun as of now,I set mine up with a 1-12" twist good for the 90 gr, VLD, if I was to do it over I think I would go with the 1-10" for the 105gr. VLDS but that's just me..hope I helped you out a little, I shure other members on here with give there two cents too.

Yeah i'm definitley am going to replace the stock, since I have the cheap tupperware stock on it now. That's part of the reason I want to go ahead and get a new barrell put on so I don't replace the stock twice. I really want to shoot 100grners and above, what twist rate should I look at, and should I go ahead and make it an AI?

Go ahead with the AI or maybe even a 6mm Remington AI (roughly the same size just more neck). I would go with a 1-8" twist if you want to shoot the 105 Berger and other high b.c. vlds. I have a Remington 700 done by Clay Spencer. It cost me 1000.00 bucks to true the action and rebarrel it with his barrel. I went with a 6mmbr. Clays work is among the best. It is my most consistently accurate gun I own.

Man I was hoping it might cost a lot less then that, not trying to be cheap by no means just don't have that cash right now. I was thinking that if it costs a lot I should just save my money and get another higher end rifle! sendero, 5r mil spec, savage 12bvss, or such and leave this one alone. Not sure if I should just get a higher end rifle or get this one upgraded?

Truth be told, thinking about a 5R myself.
