.338 M.O.A.G. (mother of all guns) pics and story

Kirb,
Thanks for your comments!
I would love to try some of those 300 grain match bullets. What is the availability on them and price?

I was getting an avg of 3026 with 98 grains of RL25. I might be able to go more, but it was showing some slight signs of being max. N170 was milder at 99 grains but needed more powder to find max. I think it will go up to about 103 grains fine.

Yes, it'll go subsonic at 2300 yards here but Kregg Slack sent me a video of his .338 Lap improved shooting at 3520 yards just fine. I guess that huge bullet still keeps going even if the velocity is sub. Time will tell.

Hey, could you post your gun here that looks like they might be twinners? Much appreciated!

Hey GG,
I remember the post that Kregg made about that tape, mentioning that he didn't want to go into the video business, but that he would send you a copy, still got it? I would love to see it!

Goodgrouper sir, would you mind posting a picture of the underside of the gun, specifically the trigger area? I had heard that the trigger does not sit flush with the bottom of the stock and that the trigger is partially inside the stock when the McMillan LBR and HBR stocks are used with smaller actions other than the big .50 actions.

Also, how much lead fill is in your stock to get your 50 pound plus weight?

goodgrouper

Great lookin rifle and cartridge. Do you shoot LR Benchrest? You should. NBRSA Nationals in Sacramento this year and in Byers CO next year. By the way, what is that white stuff on the tops of those hills in the background?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

goodgrouper,

Wow! What a set up. Great looking LR rig.

Dude, you're living the dream!

Regards,

abinok,
yeah I've still got it. I don't want to get in the video copying business, but If you send me a blank VHS and give me about a month (chuck season is starting and I will be terribly busy) I'll get you and only you a copy. If someone else wants it, you'll have to make it for them. A chain tape if you will.

Troy,
my camera is recharging, but I looked and the trigger guard is flush and the trigger protrudes down the regular amount and is not hard to reach. I don't know how much lead is in it, but it is the maximum amount they use at Mcbros.

Hey GG I would also like that info as well. The table plans, not the video.

This is a link to pictures of a shooting table Gonehuntingagain and I put together a while back. The boy is my oldest son. It is a big heavy table but I think I would like to put something like yours together on a slightly smaller scale for little quickie trips to the desert.

4,
This is actually the biggest bench 7mmrhb has made to date. Everything else prior has been smaller by these standards but they are still quite big and not exactly light, although I guess you could make it light by which materials you choose.
We made the benchtop wider and longer for the total surface area needed to rest this beast and all the other crap you see on it! Normally they are 2/3 the size.

great looking rig goodgrooper.. i have basically a .338edge coming together hopefully before fall.. waiting on barrel and reamer to come... wont be as heavy as yours hoping around 13.5 - 15lbs.. might add some weight though.. but will have a break on it to help. pics are great.. hope they keep coming... i just wish i had somewhere that great and far to play.. maybe i will move.. any place hiring out there..?? lol

I noticed that you also welded an extension on your rifle rest as well.

Dang it. I started posting something and got talking with my wife about something else and now I can't remember what I was going to say. I hate it when that happens.

When I think of it I'll post it.

I just crunched some recoil numbers and your 52 lb gun has the same recoil energy as my .308 10.5 lb gun. If you reduced your gun to an Idaho hunting legal weight of 15 lbs the recoil energy would go from about 11 ft/lbs to a tooth rattling 40 ft/lbs. No wonder you went so heavy. Did you guys consider a muzzle brake at all?

Here is the picture of Fiftydrivers ultralite rig.
