I am falling apart ...

I had an MRI done on my left shoulder yesterday due to an annoying pain. Today, I was told I have a shoulder labrum tear. I am scheduled to see an orthopedic surgeon in a couple of weeks.
Hell to get old. I was in my garage reach up to get a spray can of paint and tore bicep muscle off. Unbelievable. Then sit and think of things you was capable of doing and no more. Funny how time slipped away

A labrum tear isn't the worst thing that can happen to a shoulder, and it's often correctable. The newer surgical procedures are probably better than the old ones, where they just cut out the torn piece and send you on your way. I had that done back in the 80's, along with an arthroscopic procedure to re-attach some torn rotator cuff ligaments.

Fast forward to 2010, and I began having more trouble with that shoulder, since it wasn't fully stabilized with that procedure. Our doctor gave me PRP injections ( Platelet-Rich Plasma ) in the labrum, and other areas where I had partial tears in the tendons & ligaments. He spun the platelets out of my blood, and injected them into the damaged tissue so that the growth factors in the platelets would induce their healing effects. This was when that was a new procedure, and the labrum grew back together. What had formerly looked like the letter C grew back into a nice O-ring on the end of the shoulder bone, restoring its proper function. I saw it clearly on ultrasound, both before and after. It took several injections to accomplish this, done over a period of about six months. It worked VERY well. This restored full function of the labrum, and fully stabilized the shoulder joint.

Fast forward yet again, to the present - we now have super-concentrated PRP, which is many times more effective. It's called SCP, and I have had this done to repair new injuries several times. Instead of a series of injections over several months, it's often a one-time thing. They now do this using ultrasound and/or fluoroscopic guidance, to precisely place the platelets in the injured area. It's somewhat expensive, and insurance doesn't cover it - but I'll tell you what ...... if I didn't have the cash on hand to cover it, I would sell something to pay for it. It is EXTREMELY effective, ever on old guys like me, and I have avoided surgeries several times with these regenerative treatments. My wife just had her neck and both shoulders injected yesterday, and we're waiting to see if she has a success story to tell in a month or two. Based on my own results, I don't think she'll be disappointed.

The company that started this is REGENEXX, and they're in the Denver area. They have a network of about 100 clinics around the country, as well as several in other countries. I have nothing but good things to say about this company, and the effectiveness of their procedures. They also are the ones who do all the research and development of new procedures, equipment for processing the various blood products they use for the injections, and the training of the doctors who administer these treatments. They have also pioneered stem cell therapies, which is taking this to the next level. I've had that, too, and it has been amazing. There's a button on their website that takes you to a map showing where they have their satellite clinics, and there's probably one close to where you live. If you want to read up on how these regenerative therapies work, I can help you with that. Just send me an email address, and I'll send you some info. Best of luck with this issue, Sir.

I am fully aware of it. The surgeon I will be seeing is a fishing buddy of mine. I am sure he will let me know my best course of actions. Thanks!

Read up on BPC 157 peptide.
It reduces inflammation in joints, injuries, you name it. My wife has had several disks repaired and that is one very welcome side effect. She was in the pharma industry for 20 or so years and expects new indications to be coming for various ailments beyond the current ones. Soon.

I just 10 days ago had L5 and S1 fused for this, tried PT and injections, nothing worked. I am 68 years old, didn't want to decline any further, difficulty hiking or even walking any significant distance, wanted to get back my leg strength for skiing too.
How did it turn out Dan?

Surgery went great, they tell me they took 20 years off my lower spine so that part of me should perform as if about 50 YO. I'm recovering well, haven't used pain or other meds for about 4 or 5 days, and ready to fully dump the walker, no later than Monday the 13th. Only use it about 50% of the time now. They say 3 months max for full recovery and I can Hike distances, Hunt etc. After that, I will be skiing ~30 days this winter. BTW I am 68 years old. Will partly retire in 2.5 years. Max part time to 75 YO. My titanium Hardware X-rays below.
I should have done this 2 or 3 years ago, been using ibuprofen to ski or hike. BTW I'm in Ogden, UT

I just might do that. Thanks
I generally avoid doctors and medicine etc. It was no doubt, the risk to benefits ratio made it a no brainer for me, and I put off doing anything for 3 to 4 years. My quality of life the last 2 to 3 would have been much better with full activity/mobility. I want to stay very active to at least 85 years old.
No (initial) pain, no gain.

a recommendation after having double rotator cuff surgery 18 months ago, try some physical therapy first for a couple of months
Had a labrum tear repair arthroscopically back in 2003, served me well until a total reverse shoulder replacement in 2024. Getting old sucks. Getting old and letting it interfere with what you want to do is just giving up. Get that fixed.
