Because I mostly still hunt, 90% plus of my shots are offhand, and i shoot only open sights, which is a challenge for my over 60 eyes.
A few years ago I shot a boar at 70 yds. OH with one of my Uberti .357 SA's. Another at about 60 yds. OH with my 4 5/8" Blackhawk .41 Magnum, many OH around 50 yds. with various single actions in .41 Magnum and .44 Special.
Shooting with proficiency at distance with a handgun, at least for me, takes LOTS of practice.

On a hunt in north central Pennsylvania, shooting a S&W 629 in .44mag IMI 240gr ammo. A buck running at me quartering towards. Took my first shot at about 80yds then four more shots, still running through about 35yds. The deer disappeared over a drop off. Figuring I missed cleanly I holstered the 629 and went to the drop-off carrying my rifle. The deer was laying at the bottom. When I dressed and skinnned it I found five entry holes and 4 exit holes.
Love that revolver 9.5 inch in 44 magnum, and 22 Hornet. It's a pleasure to shoot.

For a 14 year old thread, this is getting alot of attention! 
About 50 years ago, I saw a coyote pup running across a plowed field about 125 yards away. Shotgun with birdshot was a nonstarter! I grabbed my S&W 6" M19 and "let'er" fly. Five shots later, I've busted dirt clods all around him, but haven't touched him!
I cocked the revolver, lined up S.W.A.G. aim and was amazed to see the 'yote crumple like a wet dish rag. We (I had a witness!) drove over to inspect the target.
The bullet hit him in the neck, sinking his ship!
It proved to be a mercy kill, the little fellow was one huge mange scab!
Nose to tail!
About 20 years ago, I pulled into a hunting lease. About 30 yards away, a prairie dog stood up in his burrow.
I drug out the Ruger MK IV laying on the seat beside me, rested it on the rear view mirror and squeezed off a round! Spot on!
One dead "p-dog"!

Longest shot and "on game" are 2 different things in my eye. In our FL hunting club, we had a member state he shot at a doe with his 9mm service pistol. We asked him if he hit it and he said he didn't know because he didn't look. We chastized him and then looked ourselves, but couldn't find any blood to follow. We were pretty certain he wounded that doe. He was a Capt at the time (2020) in the FL Okaloosa or Walton county sheriff's office.

Are these scoped or iron sights?
I have a Ruger Black Hawk .357 mag and a Super Blackhawk .44 mag

You'd be surprised, or probably not, at how many hunters shoot and don't look. They don't see any indication of a hit and think they missed. Or aren't experienced enough to hear the thump or know what indications of a hit look like. Then there are those that think they hit every one they shoot at. Because that is where the crosshairs were when they pulled the trigger. The latter will drive someone with a tracking dog, I had a good one, bat shart crazy. That is when caller ID really pays dividends.
