Not one bit of the following is meant to sway your opinion. This is a FWIW post only. Maybe entertaining - maybe informative? Maybe neither or both? I just thought it might (?) merit another discusion.
First, yes, I DID read the 100 Forum posts that said 22" is just fine.....Thank you......next subject please.
HOWEVER - among the many, I also found this post (not mine):
"Over the past years, while using my chrony, someone will get enough nerve to ask if I will chrony their rifle. Once I agree, several others invariably ask. Results? Very few factory loads get within 50-75fps of factory specs. Probably the most common that fall short are the 270, 25-06 with 22" and Remington 7 mag with 24" barrels are as much as 200fps slower. When they see the results, some get mad at me or blame the chrony! The newer 260/6.5s, 708, and 308 with 24" barrels usually get close."
I agree with the above and why my .270 has a 24" barrel.
For hunting purposes - advantages of the longer barrel - real or imagined -
IMHO - do matter. FPS, trajectory, terminal effectiveness - I'll take every advantege I can get - within reason of course. No need for a 28" barrel.
Will a 22" .270 with 150 gr Partition work on an Elk / Moose? Of course. All day, every day, proven. That said,
on an ELK / Moose - every advantage a 24" will give me - Thank You very much, I'll take it for 2 reasons: 1) Each & every external and terminal ballistic advantage the 24" provides and 2) personal confidence.
Of course..........and this is VERY important...........YMMV.
