Reloading 22-250 with cool burning powder ????

36.5 gr Benchmark with 50gr Vmax in Lapua brass runs 4070 FPS sub 1/2 MOA and single digit ES/SD. Tried CFE223,Superformance, XBR8208, H380 and it was the best 2nd was the XBR8208
 
I would guess that powder flame temps would be dependent on pressures generated, like loading a slower burning powder compared to the same weight of a faster burning powder, generating more pressure.

The burn rate would be determined by grain size, surface area, & deterent coatings, for ball powders deterent coatings. A list or chart of powder flame temps would be sort of useless if pressures were not close. A certain round loaded at 63K psi with the same powder as another round loaded at 58K psi would have different flame temperatures. Any flame temperature chart would need to be generated under strictly controlled lab conditions where pressures were held near equal - not to be expected by handloaders. Possibly this is why powder flame temperatures are not shown by powder makers.

I have 4 fast twist, 7.7, .22-.250's. I load 33.5 grains of double base (NG) VN 540 with the 62 grain H ELDVT bullet at about 3,550 fps. I use 36.3 gr. H4350 with the 75 H ELDM at about 3175. Pressures appear to be aproximately equal. Case life is good and barrel accuracy is good over last 3 years. I would guess the flame temps of both are within 10%.

My casual reading about RL 17 is that the deterents used penetrate the powder kernals vs just coating kernals. Possibly during powder burning heat is maintained for a longer time causing more wear but sustaining higher levels of pressure for higher velocities.

I have a Remington model 7 22-250 slow twist that I decided to have AI. With hammer bullets 35 grains and 44 grains of Varget it has produced 4490 fps with no pressure and is like a laser. I like this one so much I have considered an 8 twist Tikka for heavy bullets. This rifle has a 26" barrel and could probably be pushed faster but it just works. Varget seems to work just fine
 
Why worry about it? Stuff that thing full of h380 and go kill stuff. It will take the average guy years and years to burn out a 22-250.
I agree! My 22-250 Varmint rifle has had a lot of loads through it with experimenting -- especially after I could no longer find H-4895 -- which gave me 1/4 inch groups (3 shot). I can find it now but won't pay $70.00 per pound.
Even before I started trying to find a replacement powder, I put a lot of shots through that barrel -- and I couldn't even estimate the number! While looking for a replacement for H-4895, I tried AA2230, AA2460, AA2495, AA2520, H380, BL-C(2), Benchmark, CFE223, IMR4895, TAC & WW 748! That's 11 different powders and working up loads in steps with each powder -- and it will still shoot into 1/4 inch when I do my part using what little I have of H-4895. Out of all those powders, AA 2460 gives me what H-4895 does -- but the barrel still isn't shot out!
