I've been a lifelong Weatherby fan after purchasing my first rifle at 12 years old, a stainless synthetic Mark V in .257 Wby. Unfortunately, I had to sell that rifle just after my wife and I got married to pay for tires as we were fairly short on funds at the time.
After Weatherby moved up to Sheridan, Wy I was determined to have another Weatherby Mark V.
Almost 20 years after selling my first one, I was able to get another!
The rifle is a Weatherby Custom Shop 6.5-300 built last summer. I was able to pick the rifle up from Weatherby at their Sheridan location on September 26, 2025. It was a great experience picking it up right there in Sheridan at the Weatherby Showroom.
I immediately started load development using the Hammer 125HHT, Peterson cases, CCI primers and VV N570 powder. This was my first attempt at trying out Hammer bullets, and it didn't take long to get me hooked. The Final load ended up at 83.7gr of VV570: 3,540 fps Avg, 21 ES, 7.6 SD. They shot lights out, with the best 5 shot group I recorded at 0.25" center to center at 100yd. Aggregate of all groups is still averaging around 0.5" with this load.
The hunt was anti-climactic unfortunately. The 2025 hunting season focused on getting my boys (ages 10 and 11 at the time), and my nephew their deer. First time hunting for my younger son and my nephew; second season for my older son. All three were successful and I was so happy for them.
With all three boys tagged out, we focused on hunting for my wife's tags for a few weekends without much luck. I had the Wednesday November 26th off of work to be with the kids and to get some chores done before Thanksgiving. As luck would have it, the kids and I spotted a few does on the move with a decent buck chasing after them in the draw just down from the house just after 9am.
Immediately we could tell this was a good buck, especially for what we usually see locally. We scrambled to our gear and to get in position before they moved off. In only a matter of minutes I got setup as the doe led the buck through a clearing just over 400yds away. He paused for a second and I took the shot. He jumped and ran into the trees about 10yds ahead and never came out. The bullet performed excellently turning the lungs into mush before exiting.
