The Boyd's Classic laminated stock I have is exactly 1 pound heavier than the Ruger factory plastic stock. I'd advise against it for a 12 year old, even a big 12 year old.
But do put a Timney trigger on his rifle. It will make him a better shot and that will encourage him.
