IMR 4350 Why is it so Expensive,?

Looks like most of the IMR powders are $60+ per pound.
So back to my original question.
Is there some reason they are more expensive.?
Do they cost more to make or is it supply and demand?
It's because they haven't been on the shelves for quite sometime. It's easy to charge high rates when folks need/want that powder.
 
I we into a local shop yesterday looking for some RL powders. Didn't get price, but they only had 10X, RL50, and 4000MR. They had at least 15 lbs of the 10X. I use it, but not in need of any for a while. They also had tons of IMR 4350, but once again didn't ask price. Went to a big box store right after. Average price of H powders were $45, except for H4350…$72. Crazy…
 
I made the rounds of the stores in Missoula,Mt Thurs.
Most powders were running $35-$40 ,but IMR 4350 was about $60.
I asked CoPilot and she had some excuses about consistency ,versatility & reputation!
I was just buying powder in Missoula last week and it's the same there as anywhere else, Hodgdon/IMR are $50+/lb
Vihtavouri and some of the less popular rifle powders are the only thing left in the $40 range..
Personally I'm done paying for the popular ripoff powders, after my 16lbs of H4350 is gone I'll be switching to its alternatives.
 
We have just purchased several pounds of R-16 (because we could) and can also use it as a sub for H-4350 (48 lbs). We just shoot in our .260, 1K rifle so a lot of rounds and then a few in .243, .270wsm, .325wsm HUNTING.
Len - If I had 48 lbs. of H4350, I would feel very powder secure. If you ever have a sale, let us know. 😁

Cellulose sources like wood pulp & cotton are real cheap. Nitric acid is also real cheap & used for a great variety of industrial applications. Other components like burn rate deterents & stabilizers are added in tiny amounts of less than 5%. Double base powders contain nitroglycerine & nitrocellulose. Nitroglycerine has a variety of uses like heart meds & explosives used for mining & other. Nitroglycerine has been around for about 150 years.

Making smokeless powders is not "Rocket Science". Some notable disasters have happened when making extruded smokeless powders - massive death & destruction when 20 tons or so goes up in a big blast during the drying stage. Busted windows about 1 mile from blast. This happened during & after WWI. No extruded powders are made in the USA.

My guess is that manufactured stocks of nitrocellulose and non med nitroglycerine are being diverted for military ordinance/weapon production.

IMR 4350 does not contain plutonium. Get used to ball powders & develop loads using it.
 
Look at this at Scheels in Grand Scapes TX. I about had an anxiety attack! Of course, I was visiting and could not take Powder on the plane.
