Why do you use Match bullets hunting?

Why do you use Match bullets for hunting, or do you?

  • Because they are most accurate from my gun and I don't handload!

Unless its dangerous game. I use a heavy for caliber berger and drive it to 2900-3000 fps. Eliminates explosive expansion up close and it will still readily expand as far as i plan on shooting. They will penetrate deep and crumple animals in their tracks on a consistent basis. If dangerous game is an issue, I try and get a load with a swift aframe that shoots accurate and I note what the offset is between rounds.
 
All of the above....ELDms(& the old amax) have been my goto bullets for years
They work! Heavy for calibar and lower velocities are key
Thier the most consistantly available
Open prairie helps but very few go anywhere but straight down!
Suppressors and range really help.
I dont hunt much under 300 yards and no heavy timber.

Wow, your impact velocity must have been way over 2500 FPS in all cases. Had that happened to me, I would have quit using them after the second instance like I did with Nosler Partitions. I loaded some 150 TTSX for my friends 7 mag and he hit a nice buck at about 40 yds in the near shoulder. As the bullet passed thru the shoulder blade, it lost all 4 petals - like a hammer. It has been the only Barnes we have used that lost any petals, much less 4 of them. We now use the 145 LRX and have had good success with them.
 
There is no perfect bullet. Bullet selection should be made to suit the need and desired results. Things to consider are size of animals, impact velocity, penetration desired, acceptable meat damage, environmental/terrain, The biggest most important part of bullet selection is picking an adequate projectile and having the ability to place it where it needs to be and the ethics's to not send it when things are not right. Personally I like velocity with expansion some retained bullet weight, ideally with the bullet under the off side hide or a hole going through not a giant crater "unless it's a coyote. Basically all the bullets energy transferred to the animal. I like accubonds, ballistic tips, swift corridors terminal accents. At close range I like them in the lungs at long range in the shoulder. As long as a bullet penetrates and expends it energy in vital tissue or the nervous system it will work. Target bullets work just fine when matched to the task/animal and conditions at hand. For real long range in big magnums the added accuracy and ease of expansion could/should even be desired. Just my two cents. Shoot straight and try not to get your panties in a bunch.

TARGET BULLETS ARE NOT HUNTING BULLETS, & HUNTING BULLETS ARE NOT TARGET BULLETS.

As a statement, this is basically true. & conversely so as well.
If they are Intentionally Designed, Marketed, & Labled as such! Period !! Deal with it !!

It doesn't mean they absolutely can not be used in opposing applications.

Bullets are projectiles.

Projectiles require certain flight characteristics.

Projectiles have specific application design.

Applications require understanding
Projectile design & characteristics.

Application results require use.

Successful results are determined by how tightly one is holding the application environment parameters.

Know what, when, where, & how you are using a projectile for hunting.
Know the projectile's Terminal Performance characteristics & expected repeatable results.
Regardless how it's Labled !!

On the above I haven't got access to my recovered pills & probably already have pictures in my phone but I need to keep a eye out for deer @ present ( our deer season) so the Barnes when they shed are nothing like a hammer ceb apex etc

If you like the mushroom monos my advice is stick to a mushroom one & if one likes shedding stick to a shedding

The ones who try to have a foot in ea camp doesn't give the best results
