Ramshot Grand, and did it replace Magnum?

It looks to me that they took Ramshot Magnum off the New burn chart, and where it would be is where the Grand is located. They must of need to rename due to the new additives for reducing copper fouling and temp sensitivity. I wonder if it is a direct replacement or not? I use Ramshot magnum in my 300prc and 6.5prc with good results and still have around 26lbs. So I don't think I will be trying the new stuff for a bit or might pick up a pound and see the difference. I like tinkering but not burning barrels up that already shoot well. It's a love hate relationship I guess. I won't mind if the product is actually better but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. The old saying goes "Don't fix something if it ain't broke".

It's supposed to be like H1000 so hopefully it's just as good. But I doubt it

There's an article in the 2024 Hodgdon Reloading Magazine (found at grocery store). It includes some load data for Ramshot Grand. You can see it used/listed in the same cartridges as H1000. It's a spherical powder. It's for sure not a direct 1-to-1 substitute for H1000 as far as weight goes. For a couple cartridges "Grand" was very close, in some was faster, some slower (FPS).

That doesn't answer the direct question you had. I don't remember the article mentioning Magnum going away.

On another forum, a member there said they called Hodgdon and they claim Hodgdon told them Grand is not replacing Magnum and they will still have Magnum. I have my thoughts on it, as I haven't seen any Magnum in a long time, and my .300 WM likes it.

Hodgdon plays too many games with powders. Thats why I left their products. Some great powders were dropped by them over the years. Granted some were surplus. H-450, enduron line, Red green, blue, target, dont think unequal ever made it to the stores, H870, to name a few. I've found Ramshot to be good ball powders though.

Hodgdon doesn't make their own smokeless powders. All they can do is sell what's available from their suppliers like General Dynamics (IMR, Winchester, Hodgdon, Accurate), ADI (Hodgdon Extreme) and PB Clermont (Ramshot).

I know that. They have never made powder. They do however drop powders. The enduron line, they were having trouble getting it so they dropped it. Imr red, blue, green target, unequal. There are numerous others over the last 5 decades. Tired of working up loads everytime they decide to drop a powder. Ive moved on.

The article in the new Hodgdon reloading Magazine says that Magnum is temp stable and a double base powder. I don't know about Magnum. I'm currently using Magnum in my 6.8 Western and H1000 struggles to get similar velocities. I'm looking forward to trying Grand in the 6.8W and maybe even in the 300 PRC; although H1000 has been outstanding in my 300PRC.

Might have to try it in my new 270WSM I'm building right now.

There's a lot to like about the concept of a double base, temp stable ball powder. It should produce exceptional velocities in certain cartridges where you just can't get enough stick powder in the case.

As far as temp stability, it seems like the Staball line (I'm assuming similar technology for Grand), is actually pretty good. Jonny's reloading did a test on staball 6.5 and I think it came out around .40-.50 fps per degree. That's very usable performance. It's not going to replace the Hodgdon Extreme powders in F class. However, for hunting? It will totally work. Out to fairly long range, I doubt you would notice a difference between the two and will likely appreciate a velocity gain.

I for one am pretty excited about where things are headed.

Typo- Article says "Grand" is temp stable and double base.
Same Hodgdon magazine has table of burn rates and both Grand and Magnum are listed. They are right next to each other.
