Our Next Generation of Shooters

So I have loved guns my entire life. My father was not huge into guns but however was a true outdoorsman and hunter. He didn't have a large collection of guns but every one of them had a specific purpose. My little boy is now 5 and I have him three guns already and would like to get some better ideas of what u guys are getting for your kids to get them interested in shooting and hunting and also guns for them to pass on to their kids. There is nothing like seeing a kid shoot a gun at a target and actually hit it where they were aiming, that smile and pride is simply contagious. I am so excited now that he is getting older to have a new hunting partner in the future!
30 years ago I started my son out with a 22 Chipmunk and he has passed it down through three of my grandkids. I've bought each of my grandchildren a Henry 22 and have stocked my gun safe with rifles and shotguns for each of them.
One reminder in case the "Anti's" come into power again and make ammo hard to come by. I've bought at least three cases of ammo for each of the big bore rifles and enough reloading stuff to reload each brass at least five times. I remember everyone competing for every single cartridge with outrageous prices and don't want my grandkids to go through that.

Long time lurker here, and I think first post..
My wife laughed at me a long time before our son was born. I was buying at least 1 gun a month while she was pregnant. We didn't know gender, and I told her it didn't matter to me as long as our kid enjoyed shooting. He is now almost 3 and has about 15 firearms waiting on him. My grandfather bought me a firearm every year for my birthday, engraved with my name and month/year that he gave it to me..
Marlin single shot bolt 22LR Trainer to start (same one my grandfather started me)
Progressing to a CZ 452 22LR Lux Trainer, then to a set of CZ 527's in .223, 7.62x39(youth model) and .308.
Had a custom AR-lower built with his name and birth date as serial with milled lion's head on one side of magazine well (he's a Leo), passing him my father's Browning Gold Medalist International that I used to shoot ALOT..
Bought us matching sequential #ed S&W Custom Shop 1911s (he'll be the first to pull the trigger on his)
Winchester 94 in 22mag
Picked him up a safe queen unused Browning Medallion in .308 at a STEAL for his first white-tail..
Several others that his mother doesn't know about and WOULD kill me if she knew how much the NightHawk Custom and the Cooper cost..
I don't think it is going to be an issue, as he has already helped me dress multiple deer and a black bear, but if he isn't into firearm sports.... he'll be introduced as his mother's son.. Lol

That's the plan I'm trying to use with mine in the process of working towards big game. Safe gun handling first and foremost, then accuracy, then let the maturity level decide when they're ready. Both kids are plenty accurate, my son(5) "thinks" he's ready to go, my daughter (7) says she wants to wait another year or so because she doesn't want to mess up(her words). She's been asking questions like what happens if you don't hit the deer where you are supposed to so I'd say she's getting closer to ready than she realizes.

My 13 year old which is in the pic earlier in the post things she is Bob Lee Swagger lol. I have taken her out and shoot steel with 22 and 223. I got her good out to about 200 yds with 22 on small moa steel which of all calibers is a challenge especially with subs as you can literally watch the bullet if the sun is to shining from behind you. Then when she shot the 223 at 200 which is way easier I think her confidence got a little to high lol.

First gun to buy is always the one that you might not be able to get them in the next 5 or 10 years. I bought my kids a bunch of those dreaded black guns a couple years back. I second a lot of replies about low recoiling guns for young kids, my son didnt want to turkey hunt because the 20 gauge hurt him. Another thing that really bothers kids is the noise, suppressors are the best thing ever for kids and neighbors too. A suppressed 22 with subsonic ammo is my kids favorite. My kids have taken several whitetails now with a suppressed 308 and 300 b/o and no worries about ears ringing for hours.

Yea, my son and wife are on the 3 trusts that are still in limbo.. He will be started on a suppressed 22 for as long as he wants to shoot.

It's an exciting time my friend... I was blessed with 3 sons....all avid hunters. At 5 he definitely needs a BB gun and a knock down resettable target...or small water balloons hung on a string in the backyard...needs it to be fun! From your hundreds of posts you don't seem to be a fella needing advice...but you asked ...top three for my boys....5 a BB gun...safe handling instructions....7-8...22 cal ...10 a .410. 12... daddy's choice....enjoy... they grow faster than you can ever imagine

Thank you sir for your experience. Yeah in my opinion he is still a little young to be using a 22 on his own simply because he still has that attention to detail issue rooting from a very small attention span! Right now I am working a lot just in my gun room on the floor the basics of getting behind a gun and trigger pull and cheek weld stuff like that. He digs it, and loves telling everyone that he has guns at home. I keep waiting for someone to call child protective services on me!! Oh no he has guns and he lets his kids touch them.....GET THE ROPE!

You are more than welcome...as I said.. exciting times... I have no doubt from all your posts that your kids are in great hands. I'm Canadian and every friggin day the bleeding hearts are attempting to get our guns...for the most part I'm a fairly law abiding citizen... wouldn't mind staying this way....God forbid someone should come to door to collect guns!

Yes sir, that my friend would be a job with a very very low life expectancy, thanks again sir your experienced view! Being a parent in this day and age with such a sick and twisted world where everyday is a challenge keeping a freedom or right you had yesterday is by far the biggest challenge I have experienced.

Amen brother!
