So I have loved guns my entire life. My father was not huge into guns but however was a true outdoorsman and hunter. He didn't have a large collection of guns but every one of them had a specific purpose. My little boy is now 5 and I have him three guns already and would like to get some better ideas of what u guys are getting for your kids to get them interested in shooting and hunting and also guns for them to pass on to their kids. There is nothing like seeing a kid shoot a gun at a target and actually hit it where they were aiming, that smile and pride is simply contagious. I am so excited now that he is getting older to have a new hunting partner in the future!

So this is what I got him sir far. Glenfield mod 60 22LR, cool little squirrel in the stock. Second is a marlin limited edition model 3079 (336) 30-30 with neat deer in stock. Both of these were handed down to me when my grandfather passed. Last is a browning BPS 12 all scrolled up that has never been shot. Just a pretty shotgun! This is what I got so far! Need some ideas!

I have a 6 year old grandson , that I want to get shooting some this summer . I'm thinking I'm going to buy a 22 marlin bolt action . he can learn to work the bolt ,and load the magazine. I think I should be able to cut down the stock to fit him . as he grows I'll add to the stock with maybe something like the McMillan spacers . this is my plan so far . a couple years ago , I did get him a center fire rifle , I just couldn't pass it up . on one of these forums I ran into a 260 rem at what I thought was a good price . trued action , Shilen barrel , B&C stock . it's a really nice rifle , and it shoots well . I've done a little work on it ,rebedded it the bedding was failing , I put a wyatts extended box in it ,and I lengthened the throat . the factory trigger is way to light for a new shooter , so I bought a Shilen trigger for it . I found a hough stock cheap , so that is the one I'll cut down for him when he is ready to start shooting this rifle .

another good topic Remmy ! I'll be watching this thread to see what other guys are using for the new young shooters .

Love it. I am so glad to see people just spreading th shooting sport and not portraying guns as something bad. To me I tell my son this is a right of passage that will open the door to a nasty infection that most of us here share lol. Thank u sir for sharing

Hey brother,
You need something for him to shoot now. A recommendation would be one of those Chipmunk 22s. Nice and small that will fit those smaller future hunters. Just a thought.

I am trying to get back in the guns needed back home in SC, which is a different breed of guns than I use here on NM now. We will be back in SC for good in 2 more years so trying to prepare him for deer killing apocalypse there unlike here waiting to blessed with one dern tag!

He's got a 300 Normal lol by the way before the haters start this gun is unloaded, has a silencer on it and I really don't know what he is looking at cause the scope caps are closed!

Good Thread. I have 3 boys now in their 30s. Always make shooting fun. Reactive targets are best. Never make them wait while you piddle with a gun trying to make it shoot. Let it be about them and when their attention span is done stop.
Always, always have hearing protection that fits them. Never let them shoot a heavy recoiling gun it will ruin them from wanting to shoot again.
Shooting big loud hard recoiling guns is a sure way to turn them off to shooting. Trying to tell them to tuffin up or laughing at them when that 12 ga kicks them down is not the way to have a shooting partner for life. Enjoy every phase of the process. I guess it goes without saying take lots of pictures. I wish I had more.

I bought my oldest a little Cricket 22lr for his 4th birthday. Hes 5 now and really impresses me with his ability to shoot. He loves shooting gofers and steel targets at home. He keeps it up he'll be out shooting me in no time!
