Questions for the community here.
1) How much better in accuracy at distance is a fully trued/blue printed Remington action vs an action that just has the face where the barrel seats at trued?
2) I know the threads can be crooked in factory actions, how much can they be off?
3) Will that show in performance/accuracy?
4) Has anyone taken an action and just face trued and see a difference?

If you face off the front of the action you should continue with lapping of the lugs and recut the bolt face.
Only recut threads if they are out.
This is how I set up all my prone rifles as well as hunting rifles.

Just facing an action rarely achieves anything better than not facing it.
If the threads are off, facing may make the misfit worse.

I had a Win Model 70 New Haven action that had the worst lot of stacked misalignment I have ever seen, it was so bad that the barrel had .200" of eccentricity at the muzzle.
The scope mount had to be set with the rear base off-centre by .240" just to bore sight the gun.
I re-trued everything and had .005" off at the muzzle, then re-chambered the gun.
Turned out to be a 3/8 MoA 338WM shooter in the end.

On a Rem, the barrel shoulder, recess in the chamber and action faces ALL need to align or something will be off.
Lapping the lugs should be the first operation performed.

Cheers.

Sure would be neat to see an actions' accuracy before and after a true job. One that the threads were off a little to see how it shot and then true/blueprint it with the threads trued also and see what the accuracy is with the same barrel, but trueing the threads of the action, the threads will be too big for the barrel.....it would be a neat experiment to dinker around with.

It's better to do a full blueprint and do everything I've seen threads out anywhere from .005 to .020 or .025+. IMO if your already set up to cut the face might as well do it all and then the bolt too and have everything done right from the start

Warning! This thread is more than 5 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
