Help me pick a scope

I am looking for a good scope for a tikka 300 mag

I am willing to spend $800 - $1000 max. I want it to be available from Cabelas (I have $800 in Cabelas bucks to use).

It is for hunting. I like variable power and I like low magnification for faster target acquisition. I shoot fairly accurately without a lot of magnification. That said I am not shooting at a deer at 600 yards with 6x.

I want a simple easy to use scope that adjusts for drop and windage. I have never shot a gun with a scope that adjusts in any way for drop or windage. This is new and I like to keep everything as simple as I can.

I really need some input on this. I am not looking to shoot a whitetail at 100 yards. I am a bowhunter and live in Oh where rifle are not legal to hunt. I am used to getting close to game. That said I want to be able to take longer shots then my 30-06 can make.

For example shooting at a mature bull elk at 600 yards. I do not need perfection in adjustments, but I do not want to guess a 3 foot holdover. My point is I want basic adjustments that are not tricky or time consuming.

Please give me a few ideas where to start and what reticle systems are available.

Thanks!

Looking in the same class for similar reasons. The Leupold V6 2-12 with Boone and Crockett reticle looks pretty close.

I would look at the Nikon monarchs. They have plenty of magnification options, I would do a 4 to 14 range. I have several monarchs for very similar distances u are looking at. Very easy to use and very clear. Good luck on your search.

If you didn't want to contend with turrets, you might consider a Swarovski Z3 with a ballistic reticle. The glass is exceptional.

Swarovski 4-12x50 Z3 Riflescope

$1,000 for brand new

At 800 yards I could see my target better with the Z3 on 12x than I could with my Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 on 20x.

If you want a scope you can dial and extend your range past 500 yards or so, the PST is a good choice. If you don't want to ever dial, without a doubt I'd buy the Z3 Swarovski. It really is an exceptional scope for the same money.

Cabela's has this one too. It is the scope I have looked at closely. Everything you want and more. Simple function, lots of adjustment, big objective so it's bright, low enough power for hunting in the trees.

Scopes are very personal. I have an original Weaver T16 w/ Micro-Trac. It is about as much power as I want. Youngest son has a 20X and it is not the best scope so that is a big factor.

In looking at $1K tops the SHV gets my attention.

+1

I have a Monarch 4-16X50mm Side Focus that is perfect for what you are looking for. Will only cost you a little more than half of your $800 Cabelas bucks too. Every rifle I own wears a Nikon Monarch. For the price I don't think they can be beat.

^^^^ This is where it's at. NightForce all the way. With the advent of the SHV, there is no other optic mentioned in this thread that will be comparable. Granted, that is my opinion but i've owned/used almost all of them.

Wow. For that price and what looks like a great MOA reticle that is seriously worth considering.

My money is on the Swarovski, you just cannot go past good optical glass.

You need to look at the Meopta Meostar which you can purchase through Cabelas.

I recently purchased one and am very pleased with the quality and glass.
