I have a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag that is completely a stock rifle. I have never changed or added any aftermarket items to it. I am not a LR shootist, although I have a keen interest in becoming one. I purchased this rifle 12 years ago, off the shelf, and have never shot better groups than say, 1 1/2 to 2 inches (at 100 yds). My question is.....what can I add to/change on this rifle that will bring those groups to sub MOA? Where should I start? Stock.....trigger.......muzzle break?

Thanks for the advice.

in a nutshell....

Good optics mounted on 20MOA picatinny rail with tactical rings
Bed the action
Float the barrel
Get a trigger job or aftermarket trigger
Start handloading

If that doesn't get the job done, then you probably need an aftermarket barrel and at the same time have the action trued and lugs lapped.

Trigger would be first, then bedding, and maybe a new crown is where I would go with it. I have seen some factory remingtons with trigger jobs and a decent bedding job do amazing things.

Well, lets start here:

1) How many rounds down the tube? Would it benefit from re-bbl?

2) Do you reload? Are you willing to start?

3) What is your intended use? Whitetail? Elk? Mastadon?

4) ADL? BDL? CDL? What stock do you have on it?

5) What maximum range on animals?

6) What type of glass are you using?

7) BUDGET?

Lets get these answers to establish a baseline & I feel we can move forward from there.

From the peanut gallery I'll chime in with:

Cut the stock to make it fit you.

Bedding the action and free-floating the barrel are not hard. Do it yourself.

Decent optics along with rocksolid mounting systems.

Try a box or two of different premium ammo with bullets designed to kill what you want to shoot.

Clean your barrel thoroughly.

Shoot some groups from a well supported position.

You can read all day long about how well an awful lot of factory Remington 700s perform. I have one of them. I had a friend help me shorten my stock and bed the action. I was lucky enough to have a friend, who is an experienced reloader, work me up a load that will be the only load I ever shoot in this rifle/barrel configuration. I got lucky... a few baby steps and I was there.

Good luck!
