Western Hunt 2011- Rifle cow elk

After chasing antelope around Wyoming I returned to Utah to be greeted by a big snowstorm.

After a little of the snow had melted I set my camp up in the same spot I had used during the archery hunt. There were no flowers blooming any more!!!.

On the second day after setting up camp, I shot a calf at 556 yards with the 257 Wby and the 130 gr Wildcat bullets.


With all my hunting out west done I turned the truck east and came on home.

In order to build up points in Utah you have to buy a nonresident license which is $100+. So after paying that much you might as well go and hunt. A nonresident archery tag is OTC and the nonresident rifle hunt cow elk is 100% certain to draw. It is close and convenient to the Wyoming antelope hunt.

Here is my truck as I am getting ready to leave home.

First I take out the rear seats to give me more inside room. Then I put on a cap and using the boat rack on the cap I bolt on a top box. After that I use the trailer hitch to put on a rear carrier which has a plastic patio box of very light items in it. I took both my broadhead target and my field points target with me.

It is important to try to get the weight centered over the wheels as much as possible because of camber/caster problems at the rear and steering at the front. The tires are off road tires and expensive so you do not wish to wear them unevenly.

I took three rifles and two pistols.

One 100 Qt cooler holds a elk calf deboned and two antelope cut and wrapped. 10# of dry ice freezes everything solid enough in a 5-day cooler for the trip home.
