I'm hoping for a little help. I am waiting for my new cooper 6.5/284 and wanted to give the 1,000yd target a crack. The ballistics show a 142grain sierra matchking traveling 2950fps. I am putting a ziess conquest 6.5 to 20 rapid z 600 scope on it. If I sight it in at 100yds using the center cross hairs, then hold on one of the lower reticles until I'm shooting roughly 29 to 30 inches high, will that same reticle be close at 1,000yds

Depending on the environmental conditions....28 to 29 will put you on the 1000yd mark.

Not familar with the z600, but the varmit reticule has more wind hold built in and has hash marks a long way down, with 200-300 zero one of the hashes should be close. Try to look at reticules in person.

Thanks sp6/6, The 600 also has graduation lines all the way down. However, only the first 4 large lines are numbered. I was just trying to see if I could make it a little simpler, and if my calculations were in the ball park and made some sense to someone that has more experience than myself. I just helped build a 1,000yd range and thought I'd give it a whirl. thanks

Here is what I've done with some of my varmit type set ups.I will dial hold off one of the lower hashes, less to dial, for plinking and targets

With a 142smk at 2950 with decent conditions and atleast a 1000 ft above sea level, depending on the size of the target 28-30"s high at 100 you will most likely shoot over your target, I'd pull back to about 26.5"s.

ok backwoods83, I'll give that a try. We will be shooting at 2,100ft above sea level. Wasn't sure how much to subtract from the 29" hold over at 100yds to compensate for the elevation. More great info to absorb on my end. Thanks again.

I come up with about 25 MOA also. whatever line puts you 25 inches high at 100 will be pretty close at 1000 .

If you know the drops in the reticule. You can go to jbm ballistics and punch in your load and zero, I LIKE 200 for hunting. This should get you close, then at range have a object like a clay pigeon set in backstop so you can see hits, fine tune your hold and walk it in with a spotter, this will help you get wind also, now go to paper, hopeful wind holds same.good luck

Thanks sp6x6, We do have a great place to do that. I can go from 100 to 600yds at the one range and the 1,000yd range is only a couple miles down the road. When I get the rifle I'll give it all a whirl, and post my findings. Thanks again.

Ok, quick up date. The rifle is here, The Zeiss 6.5x20 went on as soon as Got the rifle home. Two long weeks later I finally went to the range. With a peek down the barrel and a look through the scope, to my surprise it's going to be on paper. First shot 1 Moa right and one moa low. I fired two more shots before adjusting, they were almost inside each other. Now back to 100, three more shots touching, just a moa high and moa left. Quick adjustment, three more shots, right where they were suppose to go, tight little clover leaf. I then set the turret's back to zero and fired three more down range, another tight clover leaf. This by far is the best out of the box shooter I've ever had the pleasure to zero in. Now to the bench and do some reloading, so I can spend a little more time and start going out a bit farther. Starting with Lapua brass, H4831sc, and Berger vld's in 130 and 140. If I can match the Black Hills Gold ammo I'll be very happy. Oh and cleaned the barrel after every five rounds, thought if I'm going to do it, do it right.
