Hunting with Bergers

Wanted to try some Bergers in my 300 win. The question is, are they any good ? any problems in finding animals. Do they do what Berger says they do? Before I get to far with this, I want to make sure they work.

Took one 200 pound WT broadside with the 168 grain VLD at 175 yards with my winnie.

Worked as advertised

Unfortunately due to warm weather and being in Canada I had a butcher process my deer. I would've like to know how the opposite shoulder was broken. I was perched 16' up in an elevated blind and placed the shot behind his leg.

A fragment had to of changed angle after it opened up breaking the opposite.

I was impressed.

The Berger Hunting VLDs drop animals quicker than any other bullet I have yet used. I would not take any off angle shots with them, but then I don't usually take off angle shots with any bullet I use. Except for on pigs... I have about as much respect for them as I do roaches or fireants...

I've only poked 1 VLD into a whitetail. It was a 105VLD from my 243AI and was probably a worse case scenario for that bullet. The shot was under 100yds on a buck that was quartering towards me. I put it in the front of the near shoulder and the buck just folded up, never made twitch. I just knew that it would be a mess when I cut him up, but it wasn't. The bullet punched through about 2-3" and then did its thing. I'm not worried in the least that they'll work as the range gets long and some velocity is scrubbed off. This year I'm going to give them an honest try in 3 rifles. 2-243AI's and the 25-06AI. Gonna start with them in Wyoming this fall on a DIY Antelope hunt (barring we're drawn for buck tags, if not it'll be just does (grin)). Also gonna run them here for deer season and our doe tags are pretty liberal so we do get some shooting in. Give them a try and see how they work for you.

Here's the exit on my wife's doe antelope from a few years ago. She used a 168 7mm Berger and the shot was around 300 yds, if memory serves. The doe was quartering towards us and her shot placement was perfect, right on the shoulder. The doe dropped in her tracks.

I have only hunted with the Berger 7mm bullets being the 140grn. in my wifes 7mm-08 and their 168 grn. 7mm bullet in my 280 Ackley Imp. both have taken Large Whitetail 's and dropped them where they stand! Small entrance hole and hardball size exit wounds! These both were shot at 2800 and 3000 fps. I hope this info helps you with your question ? I would think the biggest consideration would be what type of game do you plan on hunting with them as that would be the deciding factor if they are of the right construction for the game hunted.
