Looking for the best bullet for my custom build 300 win

I shot a dall sheep with the 180 Nosler E-Tip last fall from my 300 Win Mag @ 400 yds and once at 70 yds. Nasty entrance wounds and holes in the hide. Looked like the ram had been slapped with a pancake at supersonic velocities. Shot a lot of game with 7mm and .308 accubonds and never had a comparable experience.

I'd have just as soon hit the ram with a Berger VLD, based on the damage observed from the E-tip.

I ran the 180 E-tip two years ago and noticed the big entrance holes as well. It almost appeared like the entrance holes were made bigger from the inside out. I did not think much about it at the time but it was different.

From my experince and apperantly others if you want performance and a bullet that does not destroy meat like a gernade accu bonds are the ticket

Accubonds are a good choice but if your rifle will shoot them accurately, the 180 Swift scirroco is a great bullet. It has a high B.C. a pure copper jacket and bonded core which expands well but stays together........Rich

That is not my experience. They are frangible as well as is any other lead core bullet. I found them to be more so than some and less than some. In a lead core bullet I prefer the performance of the Swift Scirocco. I do not dislike the terminal performance of the AB, I just did not like the lack of consistency. Some times they seemed to be more frangible than others. I think the jackets are brittle. They generally shoot well out of most any rifle. So my quest for a better hunting bullet continued on past the AB. So far I have found the GS HV line of bullets to work very well from under 100 yrds out to 750 yrds. So far the only achilles heal that I can find in the GS HV bullets is the lack of bc's to hunt much past 1200 yrds in most calibers.

I have eome sirricos power 3s in 180s i will load up some and try them thanks

Some guns seem to like them and some don't. If they shoot well for you, I think you will like them. The bc's are not very high either, but good for a .308 180g bullet.

Again, I was not trying to bad mouth the AB's. I still think they are a quality bullet. In fact I load them for my Daughter's 7-08.

Good luck.

Good post Steve. We all have our favorites and what works well for some might not be the best choice for others. The 180 Scirocco is a good bullet. I shot a bull dead on in the chest at 543 yds and he tumbled straight up and over on his back. It was pretty impressive. I have had some problems getting them to shoot in other guns though, so gave up on them. I plan on trying them again in the future. For now the Accubonds are performing very well.

Maybe your best approach is to consider what has been written here and read some of the manufacturers descriptions. It can be a hard decision. Most of the bullets mentioned in this thread are good choices. Good luck.

I've had good luck with Hornady Interbonds.Group tight, nice wound channel, have always exited and still packed 100 per box!

+1 for accubond.

Might as well stay away from SST and ballistic tips cause they also have violent expansion similiar to VLD.

I have to disagree about the SST's. My cousin shot a deer in the neck at 30yrd with a 308 at a velocity around 2900fps. It entered fine, passed through the neck and exited with a half dollar size hole. That was with the 165's. I truly believe they with hold together.

okay dokey....

I am not trying to start an argument but i dont think you can get a 308 to shoot 165 grain bullets to shoot 2900fps with out creating some unsafe case pressures i have seen first hand the damege casued by sst's when you get them up to around 3000fps they destroyed most of the front shoulders of a 5 point bull at 130yds out of a 300 win mag shot by my brother

Same ole discussion. There is no perfect hunting bullet, especially no perfect LR hunting bullet. If you have the right twist, the GS HV 177 probably comes very close in the 30 cal.

The AB is the exact same construction as the Ballistic Tip, except that it is bonded. I think Steve's assessment of it's brittle or weak jacket is probably accurate. Will it do the job? I think yes for the most part. I have seen many different reports about it which implies inconsistency. Would I use it? Sure, but it wouldn't be my first pick.

I haven't used the E-Tips on game yet but have read some good reports on them and I like monometals for a lot of reasons. Here's some pics of a couple that I recovered after range practice @ 400 yds and 500 yds out of a 300 RUM @ 3400 fps MV.

They were shot through a 3/4" plywood back stop into partially frozen ground. The ground was a dirt, sand and gravel consistency, and frozen a couple of inches below the surface. One of the E-Tips partially lost a petal and it appears to have struck a rock by the scars and gouges I found in the rest of its body.

I like what I see in these pictures.

Mulie nut, another thought is to call a bullet company like Nosler and explain what type of use you have for a bullet and get their opinion.

No argument intended, it was loaded with 43.8grns Varget out of a 26" factory Savage barrel.
