What about .270 Winchester?

Calvin, I had one heck of a time wrapping my head around the 280 Also. I have a friend in N. Nevada that is a very accomplished shooter/hunter/trapper, who can shoot and chronograph right out of his front yard. He set up his Ohler 35, and shot his Rem 700 in 280 shooting the 162g Hornady btsp at 2930 fps with IMR 7828 and Fed 210s. I was a doubting Thomas up to that point regarding the 280.

If you can get access to a Nosler manual #4, you will see their Most Accurate loads with the 280 Remington which are quite impressive.

The 280 Remington only uses a smidgen of powder for a tremendous ballistic advantage with 162g ELD and Berger 168g bullets in std 9T barrels.

I will say (and did earlier haha) that I really don't get the point of the 7mm rem mag AS DICTATED BY SAAMI when both the 270 and 280 get so dang close to it ballistically. No freebore and a low chamber pressure ceiling and it's just silly almost.

If I ever do own a 7mm my top picks are the 280 rem and the 7mm Weatherby - full psi SAAMI limit and freebore that lets it shine - same capacity as yhe 7 rem mag and consistently 200-300 fps faster in load data and factory ammo.

Only put 3 rounds through my 7RM, factory, just to sight in the scope. I harvest with 270, used to use a 30.06, now semi retired, and if I need oomph, got my 300WBY. Got others with more oomph, if I need to, but have nothing to use it on.

I still love my 270 but honestly I've used the .300 win mag pretty exclusively for years now. If there's a "one size fits all" North American big game cartridge, for me it's the 300 Winnie - any fast 30 really but I can find .300 win ammo anywhere ammo is sold if, God forbid 🤢, I need factory ammo.

My oomph gun at present is a .358 Norma Mag. Doesn't have the legs of the smaller bores but have some old school 270 grain Winchester brand round nose bullets that just scream the word THUMP!!!!!!!

I can't find anything @Muddyboots about browning offering a factory rifle in .270 wcf with a 7.5 twist…can you clarify?

Thank you kindly. That's very interesting for sure.

Wait a minute…why on earth is the 270
The only one wearing a 28 inch barrel and things like the the 28 nos and 300 rum have 26"?????? Is it that the 270 is unbraked and all the others are and the brake isn't included in the barrel length???

That's so weird haha.

The .300 RUM with the 8 twist certainly has my attention loud and clear….

I am just glad "traditional" firearm manufacturers are trying to catch up with the times.
