Ruger American predator

I bought a Ruger American 7mm-08 youth for my kids. It was cheap and its accurate. Ours is an 18" barrel and our hand loads are right at 1MOA with Barnes TTSX. It has killed close to 20 deer. The bolt stop has broken and magazine doesn't feed well. It does its job and it fills the role of truck gun for the winter.

As for me, I'm not buying anymore "cheap rifles" My decision for that was based on the American. I'm moving to custom/ semi custom for everything in the future. There is nothing wrong with inexpensive guns, but it doesn't feel like a gun that I can pass to my grand children. It might last a 100 years, but my confidence is low. Maybe guns are deposable... but I'm not putting any more cheap feeling guns in my safe.

There is a lot to consider. I hope this helps!

I have been shooting one for a few years now. Have probably pushing 1000 rounds down the tube. Still shoots great and I have no complaints as far as the barreled action goes. I did swap the stock and trigger as they were not great. For the price it was hard to beat.

Tikka recently released some limited run rifles in 22-250 with a fast twist barrel. That I'd what I would be after if it were me looking for a 22-250. Most factory twists leave you stuck to 55gr or less which sucks with all the new heavier bullets available.

That said my son has a Ruger American in 7mm-08 and so far it has been a good gun.

It will be cheap because it is a cheap rifle. If that is what he is looking for then perhaps that is the way to go. A quick search on Grab A Gun and they have the new RemArms/Remington 700 in .22-250 for not much more than the American. While I am not a huge fan of Remington, that platform would have much more long term potential.

I have one in .223. Shoots 70 RDF very well. Only complaint is bolt is kind of stiff. I like it but I'll take my Savages over it any day!

I can't speak for the 22-250, but I do have a Ruger American Predator in .308 and absolutely love the gun. I have used it on my last 3 animal kills and it is usually my go to. It is light, short barrel, and accurate - what else do you need in a hunting rifle lol.

I can say that I reload for it and it will shoot consistently under .5 MOA with like no load development. I can't necessarily say how accurate it is long-range because most of my shooting is done under 200 yards with that rifle. Anything over that, I just use my 300WM or 30 Nosler.

I have one in 6.5 CM and to be honest the most frustrating thing about it is that it shoots almost as well as my custom. The cheap little bugger is incredibly accurate for what it is, I don't understand how it's possible.
My sister also has a Ruger American Predator in 6.5 CM and when we shot it I could literally not believe how good it was shooting with factory ammo. Here I am with my Bergara Premier and hours into my reloads and it shoots just as good, if not better lol.

I had looked at a Ruger Predator in the past but what I wanted was out of stock, I won several Ruger firearms and have been very happy with them. I was told the American Predator is a shooter in the store. Good luck,
