Unless I shoot it from the side into the guts, which I try very hard not to do…..my mono's will go go end to end through an elk……this includes the guts! I sincerely doubt that your Bergers, or virtually any other cup and core, partition design bullets excluded, can offer that!
That said, I did shoot an elk in the guts on a jump shot in the timber….he was vey sick, and pretty easy for a follow-up shot!
Summary: I don't think that you have a valid argument! memtb

Hammer says their bullets will open up down to 1800 fps, so I do load development and then run the numbers to see what my max range is for 1900fps to leave a margin for error. The buck I shot this year at 50 yards with a 90gr AH going 3611 at the muzzle from my 25-06 dropped in his tracks and didn't even twitch a leg. That load stays above 1900 past 650 yards....which is 150 yards further than my personal limit, but YMMV.

I've killed a pile of elk, a few deer, coyotes and a bighorn sheep with bergers ranging from less than 100 yards to 500 yards and never had a problem behind the shoulder. The cow I took this year was facing me, strait on, neck shot and down she went. Killed a bull a few years ago that was quartering hard away. Shot him at the last rib and he was done.
Don't worry about the close shots. Keep it off heavy bone and all will be good.
With all that said when I take my wife or son hunting I load Nosler accubonds in case they get into the shoulder. Accubonds will go through it but are slower killing than Bergers in my experience.

They work fine from personal experience.Congratulations! No doubt, it can be don…..and happens many times every season! How well would that combo work ……if a hard, quartering away shot, is your only shot? memtb

This is the first line everyone should etch into minds yes sometimes they will kill sometimes not but in the crease broadside they work well
My only concern is our skills & animal behaviour ( well I'll admit I'm not good enough to place with precision 100% of the time so I need a pill to cover me with ea to their own )
When you throw these into the mix things go pear shape & that's when a mono will take over but be careful on the decision on which mono you choose as just like c&c not all monos are equal & some of these will fail for various reasons
As for various angles that may come about that are not heavy bone we also need to be careful also & left or right side impact on last rib or behind it will also sort a pill's capabilities out especially the left
I like the idea of dual loads but being practical to me these days I only need one bullet from Bambi to Buff yep it's that simple for me

@GetReel some good advice from many a member just filter through & look @ where the fails or less than ideal results have occurred & if you take them on board & avoid you in a way better place than a bingo raffle

Glad that they worked for you! I've had several bad experiences and a couple less than desirable with fairly fragile cup and core bullets…..I won't risk the disappointment again! memtb
Bergers are a fragmenting bullet and going to come upart at close range or long range. At long range they may penetrate a few more inches before coming upart. If they do not fragment they are going to tumble Point being this bullet design is not deep penetrating up close or far and berger does not advertise it is. So just take shots where deep pentration is not needed with a historically adequate cartridge / weight for game (think cup and core not premium) and they should work as described. Otherwise use heavier bullets for big game/ closer range. If want any angle penetration or using light cal for game go with bullet designed to penetrate more.

And I've seen a mono pencil. So now what? I guess we shouldn't hunt because every bullet fails at some point.

Exit on a bull with a 180 elite started at 3160 at around 120 yards (didn't range it). I shot another bull this year at 60 yards with a 205 elite hunter and he also died real quick. Zero tracking on either. Seen plenty of other elk killed under 200 with Bergers. No problems. You do have to hit vitals and I think that little fact escapes many from what I have seen.

I've been using them since the early '90's…….haven't experienced that yet….nor has my wife. I can't and won't say that it will not happen.
I have far more faith in mono's (not all mono's) than any cup and core @ very close range on a large big game animal where there is a chance of hitting heavy bone, and requiring penetration measured in feet not inches! memtb

Keep using cup and core long enough ,and what you will see is an animal that will run with no blood trail or exit wound , that you may or may not find . A animal can run a long ways dead on its feet. I witnessed that Saturday morning when my granddaughter shot a nice 8 point with a cup and core , she said did I miss ,lucky I was watching the reaction of the deer heart shot , broke shoulder , looked like a grenade went off inside the animal . If she had been hunting by herself it would have been possibly a lost animal absolutely no sign of a hit backtracking from bullet impact. She will be shooting Hammers next year.
