One More Year , I Hope!

I have a completely trashed rt shoulder, not surgically repairable. Can't even go artificial its so bad. I killed decent 8 last year and thought prob last one with Hoyt Double XL. Hoyt BTW, awesome company! They made new limbs for me at 50-60 so I could try to keep shooting. Did not charge me a lot to do so! Very grateful!

But fast forward June 2022. Could not pull bow back at all. Shoulder killing me. Had to wait till August for steroid shot due to shot timing issue. Shot went fine and I waited till today to try to pull bow back at 52lbs.

Wow! I could not pull bow back in June, got steroid shot in late August and just shot 8 arrows in basement, no prob pulling back and shot pretty good! So now to outside in couple days and shoot 10, I hope at distance. It was so nice to be able to pull bow!

I have to baby the shoulder for hunting season and not over work it. I had no trouble hitting spots at 15 yds in basement so my form holds true. It should from shooting same form for 50 years!!

You cannot imagine the joy of being able to still pull bow back without screaming pain.

I hope it works out for this year, but when this year is over have you thought about switching sides? That'll give you almost 10 months to learn to shoot with the other side and since you already know all the basics it may be easy to make the switch and you won't have to worry so much each year.

I have had two Rotator Cuff surgeries on my left, one on my right and then a total on left. Had to sell my Outback which I loved to hunt turkeys with and also shot quite a few deer in early season or when I didn't want anyone to hear me.
Just go get a .410 ga single shot break open. Put an arrow in the Barrel and a shell with no shot. It is like the Extreme X-BOW but really cheap. You can make it quiet if you put an oil filter on the end of the barrel.
Seriously we will pray that the steroid shots last you get some long-lasting medical attention for you shoulder and you feel better for many years to come!

On the bright side, when Muddy takes a step forward he is really laying them down...Or so I've heard!

Mudd, I really enjoy all you bring here. Now go mow the lawn and snag a few greenbacks for the am coffee.

Here is an Adirondack bruin to keep the fire burning!

I thought about it but left also has torn rotator prob from protecting right side too much. As long as I can keep drawing right side, the "flight of the mystical arrow" will continue!😂 Like I said before, I was fortunate to learn proper draw technique that transfers draw load to back which is huge benefit under this scenario. I shudder when I watch archers draw at a 3D, I feel like I should give many of them my surgeons card since they will need him at some point. If you learn proper draw, you can draw more weight with less effort or even drawing less weight when under physical duress.

I appreciate the suggestions and hopefully the bow season will result in good buck down. Or doe!

Muddyboots, sorry to hear about your shoulder. I'm an ortho who does shoulder surgery and I'm in an area with plenty of bowhunters. Getting a bad shoulder to behave can be challenging, but it's quite unusual to have a problem so bad that there are no options. A crossbow is one potential solution. Around here you need a doctor's note to use one in an archery season - I write lots of those.

Seriously though, I'd recommend a second opinion with a shoulder specialist. There are darn few conditions that can't be improved. If it's really bad it's almost always possible to do a replacement. There are different types depending on your exact problem. In general, replacements are great at providing pain relief, but pulling back a heavy draw weight may or may not be realistic afterword. Find a surgeon who will listen and understand what you're trying to do.

Muddy. That is the hugest bone deposit , ( Osteophite) I have ever seen in my 35 years in Orthopaedic imosnt sakes and marketing! Although my area became long bone trauma , several companies had total shoulder replacement systems ! When the Glenoid was really bad. The surgeons opted for a Reverse Totsl shoulder system! I think Stryker and Wright Medical makes one today !! Google it and see if it has the possibility of helping you !!! Perhaps discuss that with a Fellowship trained Shoulder surgeon !!! Doesn't hurt to talk !!!! Yes boys. One more year !!

Same experience here. Right shoulder. Rotator cuff surgery in January this year. Proceedure went well, but not enough strength to pull bow back. Still some pain, so I transitioned to a crossbow - at least for this year. I will probably stay with it for the balance of my life as I do not want to reinjure my shoulder and go through tht therapy again.

I here ya Muddy and shoulder injuries are definitely unwelcome for sticks and strings. I fought it for years. Had five tears in my left shoulder at UGA and had multiple surgeries while with Oakland over 25 years ago and still struggle with the pain. But letting one fly and and hitting the sweet spot still makes it worth it. Good luck Sir and hope your able to continue to do what you love.

My shoulders were wrecked by Lyme disease. No hope for recovery Much too painful to draw my bow so I did the unthinkable and went to a crossbow. Now I've exposed spinal injury due to Lyme's from cocking the crossbow.
