Wyoming Guided Elk Hunt 2023

Talk to John Porter at Morning Creek Outfitters. He gets some good elk. Not sure how tough the draw is tho.

I talked to john earlier this year at the western expo. He kinda waived me off when I asked about his elk hunts, until I told him I had 13 points... That's about what it takes for his unit.

I just can't justify the cost of a guided elk hunt in the prime units in WY that I can draw. So I think i'll do a diy hunt in 2024 when i cash in my 15 points. I'd rather save my money for a cape buff or a sheep hunt. Just my priorities.

With 5 points I'm not sure what to do in WY. There are a few good outfitters who will probably shoot you straight. Call Tyler Sims, my dad has a hunt booked with him for '23. He has a few different units he hunts so they will have different point requirements. He was a straight shooter when we talked with him to book. https://www.tylersims.com/

Tidus56 , I still had to pay something like $795 for tag ! There were only 2 tags for roadless area. I hunted Ut. 30 years straight from 1983 to 2013. Then every couple years . I drew Bookcliffs deer tag in 2004. Shot a nice buck. I hunted Monticello/Blanding , Blue Mtns. Abaho Pk. Area for about 15 years straight. Moab area also. Love that country. I applied for limited deer, elk , desert bighorn and Rocky Mtn. bighorn. Nada ! Drew an Az. Rifle elk tag tho. Price of gas that's enough right there.
I just checked my points for Ut.. I have pretty close the same in Az. and Nv.

I need to start burning points in 6 states . I probably could of drawn a lope buck tag but didn't want to. At least I burned my Az. Elk points. Had 13. I've hunted Az. Archery elk many times. Can't even draw a 5BN tag with out 18 pts ! I've killed 1 bull and 5 cow elk with bow there. In 2004 I drew a rifle bull tag for unit 10 Az.. Got Nada.

You have points all over the place!! That's awesome, I only apply for Utah and Wyoming. I struggle to even draw antelope in Wyoming I just have poor luck. I think I have 6 or 7 points.

I gave up 10 pts. for elk and 5 for lope after I moved here. I could keep non res pts. If I applied for every other year. I figured I'm not moving and I'm not paying $50 plus and $30 plus to keep no res pts. I burned the deer points. I still keep up with my son's Wy. points every other year cause he has quite a few for elk deer and lope. He's in Co. now. I stopped doing his Az. and Ut. Points. They changed so you don't loose if don't apply every year. 👍🏻if you draw a lope tag in area 81, 78 or 82 I'll help you get a big loper . In Reg. F deer or limited areas within , like 109/105 deer . I've hunted N/W Wy. since 1998 before I moved here and every year since 1983. I know most of state fairly well.

I have been putting in for unit 100 but for no particular reason. I will start putting in for one the unit you suggested moving forward.

All great advice!!

I drew an any elk tag in Wyoming's Unit 45 (Bighorns) after 14 years of applying… I have an ace in the hole as my closest hunting buddy has a small ranch very near our Unit.

We are looking for a wall tent camp (for 2-4 hunters) to rent - any ideas or connections? Or know someone that would? We can either pick it up in Denver or Cody. Our hunt will be from 10/12-10/23 this year. Thanks in advance for for your help!!

I don't know of any but about a month ago a buddy was showing me a wall tent for sale on Facebook ( Fakebook) Market place or whatever it's called. I can't remember what the price was but I remember saying wow that's a good deal. It was like new

I posted earlier about saving up points but will clarify that I personally wouldn't and didn't. I used my 6 Wyoming points two years ago and had a great time and shot a 290" bull. Mark L said he wanted a 320" and that's why I recommended him to save up points. I enjoyed my trip and had a wonderful experience and I don't think it would have been better if I shot a bigger bull.

Your last sentence is worth a million! I'm for betting we'd get along just fine. I used to guide hunters from Montana to Sonora. What got me out of the business was the whole "what'd it score" mentality!

Good on you for sorting it out that what's important is trophy outdoor experiences not points...just one man's opine. Doesn't have to be others...

I wonder how it ever got to this when that's all a person worries about is score? Would I have liked to shot a 320", of course but I'm not going to let it ruin my hunt for an extra 20 or 30". If it's a decent animal for the area, I'm shooting. My tag and my choice. I'm glad others agree with my philosophy.

Dogz and birddog 68,
Glad to meet two like-minded hunters. I never cared what an elk, deer, lope or bighorn scored. If it was big enough for me I was happy. You usually know ahead of time what a big whatever species is where you are hunting. If I were a rich guy and hired Outfitter's I would hold out for the biggest whatever on the mountain, and not be conserned about not going home with meat, just a new mount . And I could afford a half of beef whenever I wanted. I've only had 3 animals ever scored. A bigorn in Ca. that F&G is required to score and plug horn. A Wy. elk that a buddy scored because he was wondering. And a buck deer in Ca. because buddy was a taxidermist and B&C scorer and was all excited. I could of cared less. I said he's average. He said "your just used to those big Wy. bucks !) I said yes. It's a baby compared to them . Lol.
More rambling . Sorry...

Totally get it and agree!!! If you're happy with it then it's a trophy! And that coupled with an in the moment experience is a home run! My old deer hunting friend back in Virginia had a mantra he would recite when he saw a deer "deer + horns = bang". That evolved to he/we shoot what gives us joy not score. That will be my game plan for my upcoming WY elk hunt.

Still looking for a wall tent camp for rent - if you have ideas/contacts again I would greatly appreciate it.
