Jewell trigger issue

I've been running a Jewell trigger in most of my rifles for years now. I had what I consider a failure at the range this weekend with the one in my 260AI R700. After shooting about 10 rounds down range loading single shot, on round 11 I had a negligent discharge. I placed a fresh cartridge in the receiver and when I closed the bolt the gun fired. Thinking maybe I somehow manipulated the trigger, I ejected the spent round and closed the bolt. Sure enough, the firing pin went forward. It did this repeatedly. If I put the safety on and closed the bolt, it would stay to the rear, even when flipping the safety off on a cocked, closed bolt.

Thinking there may have been something wrong with the bolt, I pulled the bolt out of my .308 R700 and it did the same thing. I got home and swapped the trigger out with a Trigger Tech that I had available and everything functions normally.

Any ideas what may have happened? I'll be contacting Jewell but in the meantime any idea what may have happened?

Sounds just like my old Remington 700 problem back in 1979. IM glad No one was injured. It has have some foreign matter in it to do that.Id clean it goid and block it dry with hair dryer to blow out foreign matter incase the liquid cleaner does not get it all loose.Good Luck.Keep us posted

I had that exact same symptom on my Diamond that was part of their recall. It would also not drop the hammer until I touched the bolt handle. Try cleaning it. If that fixes it I'd still want plenty of rounds downrange to trust it again.

clean it . wash it with cigarette lighter fluid , let it dry .no other lube . mine has done this . it doesn't look dirty , but cleaning fixes the problem .

Absolutely nailed it here. Jewells are pretty well known for not liking to be dirty. I absolutely love my Jewells & will never part with them... take the bad with the good I guess.

From what i've been reading all over the place, this issue is why most PRS/NRL shooters have strayed away from Jewell, they don't tolerate dirt.

You can break them. Pierced primers are known to pop Jewell triggers. It breaks them internally, but allows bolt to cock , but will not hold the firing pin back when the bolt closes. I did on my 223 by trying to go to fast.
PRS wise, I still shoot one in my Tactical rifle 308. I did send it in for rebuild after 4500 rounds as it failed to set on just one round on one stage (No AD). 40$ is the cost to repair / inspect / rebuild at Jewell. I do flush mine religiously with lighter fluid.

So I had this exact issue on one of mine. I took it home and pulled the trigger assembly out of the stock and a broken piece of what looking like a bushing fell out. This was after about 200 - 250 rounds.

Did you have the pull weight and sear engagement as light and as little as possible? Sometimes things change with a little wear. Try re-adjusting per the instructions that came with the trigger and see if that fixes it. Clean it first with lighter fluid.

No, it is set at 2.5# or so with teh appropriate spring installed.

Not in my case. A pierced primer shut down my Jewell trigger. Half a can of lighter fluid and gentle blowing with air failed to get it working. However Jewel repaired it at no cost. Now good as new.
