Why no love for 6.5 PRC for 1 mile shoots....??

My wife has a toyota wagon, it's about as basic a 4 door front-wheel drive generic toyota as it gets. Gets 33 mpg, rides nice and if I really pack it all my tools can fit in the back. Technically it works as my work truck, I've even used it on jobs requiring a ferry ride that was big $ per foot just to get to the site.

If I need bulky materials, have to drive down a long deep snowy road, or have need of more tools the truck gets pulled out. Now the cummins pushing 35s with an 8 foot bed isn't as efficient in either fuel or cost per mile... but I've moved loads it's bed heavier than the aforementioned toyota.

6.5 prc works on paper, in the dead calm, on a mild temperature day with perfect form. Add in all the realistic variables normally occurring in real world 2000 yard shooting.... then the big boomers hit their stride.

The prc is like the toyota, works fine as intended and can be pushed. In reality very few who really push for 2000 are going to turn down the bigger gas tank behind the bigger pills.

Once you lob big pills over big powder you realize it's a whole 'nuther ballgame. Old adage was b.c. over velocity importance, now it's b.c. plus velocity even more true at 2000.

Not gonna win this argument.

Well.... not wanting to be argumentative and I appreciate everyone's thoughts. I just want to consider the real numbers and I do want to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions.

I fully understand the caliber's weaknesses and know full well that it isn't the best solution for ELR. I already own the gun, so I get to live with it and honestly would buy it again, if I had a DO OVER. Small cartridges that give adequate ballistics and minimize recoil are a priority with me, mainly for 3-4 hours of range shooting. One shot kills with big recoil don't bother me.

I just ran the ballistics again to consider a 15mph cross-wind at 5,000 feet elevation, 30% humidity.

6.5 PRC = 325" (147 gr ELD® Match)
300 PRC = 294" (225 gr ELD® Match)
338 Lapua = 298" (285 gr ELD® Match)

That's a wind drift adjustment difference of 25' vs 27'.

.......

A 22LR will shoot a mile.

It says so right on the box

If you watch king of 2 miles and other lr shooting videos/competitions, another consideration is spotting your misses. A 6.5 has a smaller trail and very small bullet splash compared to a 30, 338, or bigger bullet. And also, while some people may, most people don't use factory ammo. Throw a high bc solid in a .338 specifically for ELR, and it really walks away from the smaller diameter bullets. Throw a 285 Badlands ICBM-2 in an 8 twist .338 Lapua, and the G1 bc if 1.010 will provide some impressive ballistics. And if you only have a 9.3 or 9.5 twist, the 255 will be screaming fast, and has a .845 G1, and will still outrun a 6.5 anything.

Pretty much what everyone is saying, is yes, you can use a 6.5prc for shooting out to a mile or even more, and it is actually a great thing to do, because it is harder, so if you practice a lot with one, it will make you a better shooter all the way around. It will point out little issues that a larger cartridge may cover up. However they are also saying you will not compete with a big .30 or .338 caliber, because you won't.

Sometimes there a tools in the tool box that are just better at tackling the task at hand. Can you do it. Of course! Guys use a 300 BLK at a mile. Is it ideal and the right tool? Yes and no. If it's the only gun you have then run it! I shoot a mile with a SAUM all day everyday. Doesn't beat me up like my 300 PRC, Norma or .338 Norma.. cheaper to shoot.

I've always been one that believed there are "best tools for the job".... and yeah, that is why I own 4 motorcycles.

1. Enduro Race Bike
2. Off-Road Touring
3. Adventure Bike
4. Long range Tourer

For guns... I just can't do #4..... too much recoil, for 3-4 hours of shooting.

That's great that you have (4) cycles. :D
BUT can you do WHEELIES and shoot at the same time????

You can hit the Mile with you 6.5PRC with a little TLC no problem! Brass-Load-Bullet-Barrel-Optics-SHOOTER!
Seen several 6.5s hit that mark, also saw a 6mm hit 1 mile.
Hopefully we will be going to the "ARENA" in SE Georgia sometime soon and putting our 6.5X284 along with 338LMAI to the test. There are targets out to 2,500 yds.
CAN'T WAIT!!!
Where's this at.

There's a difference between a gun that works to shoot 1 mile and a gun that works WELL to shoot one mile.

I've shot an 18" specialty pistol in 284 Win loaded with 168gr VLDs at 1 mile quite a bit. It worked when the conditions were good and I could make pretty consistent hits on a 1 MOA gong.

When conditions started to change I'd use a 30" barreled 7mm RUM shooting the old 200gr Wildcat bullets, and it worked well at 1 mile under most conditions.

When I was tired of playing around, it was time to move to a 338 SnipeTac with 300gr OTMs. That gun was built for shooting 1 mile and beyond.

The 6.5 PRC will absolutely work for shooting at 1 mile. It just won't work well.
