Traveling by air to hunt this spring in SD.
Anyone have suggestions on approved gun cases to look for purchasing. Hadn't traveled with gun flying in 10 years. Don't need any surprises at airport. Seems TSA/airports vary in hunter treatment in the past, hope that's changed for the better.

Well, TSA would likely approve what ever is easiest to get your Rifle out of accidentally!

I would recommend a Pelican with locking latches and 4 heavy keyed locks. That way when they beat the living **** out of your case and they will, your case will laugh it off.

I have used the Pelican and Plano. They need to be hard case lockable. Your best bet is to call your airline. The second thing to ask is how they want the ammunition. I had airlines that allowed it in the rifle case, and I had airlines that wanted it in a locked box in the rifle case or on its own.

I've only traveled with a shotgun and all I had was a TSA padlock to lock it. After I checked it at the TSA office I put some tape on it to show if it was ever opened. It should be ever be opened after TSA checks it. I'm pretty sure many of you have gear worth much more then my shotguns so I would probably invest in a strong case like a Pelican

Very similar. Per TSA from last trip to SD- one lock (doesn't have to be TSA approved surprisingly) per lock hole in your case. I think my pelican has four. I take an about a 1/3 roll of duct tape with me to departing airport. Once my declaration of empty is signed and put in case, I lock all locks and then run a layer of duct tape over each latch. Toss the remaining duct tape in trash or help a hunting parter with remaining tape. If my gun case is tampered with, other than the sheer abuse it receives, I will know.

Yes, because you lock it in front TSA agent and then give it to them, it does not have to be TSA lock. I use good quality master locks, four locks same key! Went all the way to S Africa and back!
Master Lock Heavy Duty Outdoor Padlock with Key, 1-3/4 in. Wide, 1-1/2 in. Shackle, 4 Pack

I added HVAC cable ties to secure case plus the duct tape and locks. The cable ties are about 1/2" wide and 42"? long and tough as dickens. You have to cut them to get case open. Place extras in case for return trip. Photo every conceivable angle of firearm including serial number. Insure it for as much as you can. Cable tie your name address cell phone number on firearm so there is no way it cannot unidentifiable. I also print my itinerary and cable tie to firearm as well.

I used s SKB airline case that has wheels which makes easy to get thru airport.

Cable Tie Link added:

tsa does not care but I travel with the Cabela's knock off pelican. I prefer them over my pelican as the have metal patches that have a twist racket lock down. Other than that they are the same I just found that system to be more to my liking. Cabelican if you will.
But make sure you buy some tsa locks. You set your code into the ones I have but they have a key that opens them to check them.
Any of the above cases will work with a good set of locks.

Only gun I ever fly with are pistols. I just put them in a $5 plastic case and put a 50 cent padlock on it then right into my suitcase with a pair of dikes to cut their flippen industrial zip tie they put on it some times. I check it right in the airport baggage claim to make sure it is still in the case. Sometimes they send it to the special room to pick up by bag, and they have to get a supervisor to let me open my own case.

Must be a glock only pistol I know tough enough to survive tsa in a cheap case. Lol
