winchester model 88, 284 winchester loads

Its your rifle to do with what you want, I just have a question? Why would you re-barrel that particular rifle. Re-barrel will ruin it's value both historical and financial. Maybe try different loads/bullets and replace it with a different rifle if it does not shoot accurately enough for what you want?
Darn, I ruined the value of my $150 Savage 110 with all the prefit barrels in numerous chambers.
Put whatever barrel you want on it and save the original for reinstall should you want to sell it and maintain its value.

Just a little info on model 88 clips. The 284 win uses a different clip from the 308 and 243 . 308 clips will not work for the 284 because the case shoulders will be pinched by the mag and not feed correctly.. These should be marked 284 on front of the mag. The 358 clips are also different from the 308 clips but are not marked 358. You can in most cases use a 308 clip for a 358, but practice feeding loaded ammo with that 308 clip before hunting.
If you can't find any 284 magasines it should be possible to bend the lips out in a 308 mag to accomidate the fatter cartridge but be carefull not to bend them too far or the cartridge will set too high in the action . I havent done this to a m88 mag but bought a ruger precision rifle in 6. 5 creedmore and put a 6.5x284 reamer in the factory barrel then used an M14 mag and bent the lips out untill it would feed with the 6.5x284 then cut the front of the mag out about half way down so I could load them longer than 2.800 and lucky me all this worked so don't be afraid to try to make a 308 mag work. good luck

thanks for the info, have 2 ruger precisions, one in 6.5 creed and one i rebarreled to 6 creed. may try your trick on the 88 and ruger!

i just acquired a mod 88 winchester in 284 winchester. i am looking for reloading suggestions for this rifle. usually use barnes ttsx or berger hybrids. this is standard, not carbine barrel, 22 in i believe. dont know twist. if it doesnt shoot well i will replace barrel with a benchmark. suggestions
First of all, it is a short barrel. Are you hunting or bench for a shooting.

Hey tooth Doc, where'd you go?
not sure of your question. where did i go hunting? se washington. having tag soup again. would like to take this to africa next time i go, hopefully next year. never, ever dreamed i would get the response to this thread i have recieved. have one member , has gathered 8 different weights, styles and brands of bullets , in 15-20 bags and sent to me for trial. wouldnt take a dime for the bullets or postage. some good people left, in this insane world! got a little vx3 2.5 -8 out to put on the 88. will be loading my petersen brass this weekend. found an old school smith who has experience with 88's to rework, smooth the trigger. have a gorgeous piece of english for new stock. this project has been fun. i am thankful to all for their input , comments and help! even those who hVe differing opinions. as a group, shooters are really good people.

Sounds good, had a discussion with other members about your length of barrel 20in and your twist rate for a 230 grain burger bullet. It's not spinning quite fast enough at a one in 10 twist. One in nine looks like it would be a winner. Barrel is short your velocities will not exceed 2800 approximately. Plenty good enough to 600 yards for terminal kill. Good luck.

barrel is 22". you got twist right. if i rebarrel, would do 1 in 8. will only do if it just wont shoot well. i have so many lr rifles im not trying to build this as a lr gun. up to maybe 500 would be absolute max here. 230 gr 7mm? i shoot 195 bergers in my 28 nosler and 168 bergers in both my 7 wsms. probably will go with a 150, maybe 168 berger in tbis 88, or a 140, 159 barnes.

28 Nosler is a good cartridge. Especially potion a 195 burger. Burgers are my first choice hunting. And that's about all I do in Arizona is hunt at least nine months of the year. I have killed more animals than I can remember with Berger Bullets.
