300 PRC+P chambered from defensive edge on a long action, whatever the cartridge, throat it for 215 berger or the like.
22' bartlein carbon barrel with a good silencer and AG composites alpine hunter stock. Short action is only a few oz lighter...not worth it for elk at 1k. Come in at 9 about # scoped Perfect. Enough weight to sit nice and kill.

Buy / build, a .270 WSM or, "Neck up" a .270 WSM Case to,.. the 7mm-.270 WSM if, building, a "Custom" Rifle.
IF, I could "stand" MORE Recoil,.. I'd build, a 7mm-270 WSM and shoot, the 175 grain to 184's,.. in it !
The Canadian's and Brit's, LOVE the 7mm-270 WSM for,.. 1,000 yd Target !

Isn't the 7 saum close to the same thing? Would you build a 7mm-270 wsm for brass availability or because the performance is better than a 7saum?

Yup, they are "Close" , in Performance,. Brass availability was, my thought.
I have heard lots of "good" about both Cart's but, Truthfully, I haven't done, a real good, Comparison.
I just know that, the Brit's and Canadian's LIKE it, for LR accuracy but, in the USA "we" prefer, the .300 WSM for, 1,000 Target.
My Recoil, "Comfort Zone" on UN-Braked, 7. 5 Pound, "Mtn Rifles", STOPS at, 140 grain, Bullets ( I like to Practice, quite a bit ).
Before getting my .270 WSM, I shot, a 7mm Rem Mag., 26" bbl, slightly Heavier Rifle, W/ BiPod, using 154 to 160 grain bullets,.. OK.
Before that, when Younger, I shot an 8.5 Pound, 25 1/2", Custom, MK-V Wby., in .338 Win Mag,.. Sold the Rifle, STILL HAVE,.. the Flinch !
I pick, my Elk Hunting Terrain where most of, the Shots are, 350 Yards or, less but, sometimes 600 Yards and the .270 WSM "can" handle that, Range.
You may want to check on, Who's making, 7 SAUM Brass, now,. Try looking for, Peterson, ADG, Alpha, Norma, etc. Good Luck with, your choice !
I'd procure "good", Brass, Bullets and Forster ( or comparable ) Dies,.. BEFORE, building, the Rifle as, we live in,.. "Weird Times" !

Probably smaller than you wanna go but I'd recommend a 6.5 SAUM. I run the Berger 156 Elite Hunter at 3030 fps in a short action. That's 1275 ft lb at 1,000 yards. My personal min is 1500 ft lb for elk and 1200 for mule deer but lots of elk are killed with 1200 ft lb. For perspective factory 300 Win Mag Hornady Precision Hunter with a 200 ELD-X has 1180 ft lb at 1,000 yards and lots of people sling those every year. But I understand some have a desire for a larger diameter. My rifle all up is 8lb with a Zeiss V6 3-18x50, and recoil is tiny.

I know you said short mag but you might look at a 33. Nosler or Dakota. I have one in a 330 Dakota and it is not bad to shoot at all. Seems more like a push rather than the sharp crack of a 30.

I'd say brass is most available in the 7 saum and 300 wsm. They seem to have the highest remaining popularity followed by the 270 wsm.

I'm not sure if anyone other that win makes wsm brass which is a turnoff.

The saim brass is made by ADG and Norma. Perhaps some can be found by Remington.

You may also find some loaded 300 wsm ammo for the brass. Problem is if shooting that far you'd cull a lot of brass out in weight sorting. I feel like premium brass is the foundation of long range shooting. Heck, bench rest guys weight sort Lapua brass.

I just got through load development for my 7 saum. It's a Stiller Predator medium action. AG Composite stock. Hunt's Long Range carbon fiber barrel, 24 inch 1-8 twist. Pushing the 190 Bergers @2885. I'm using an EC Tuner Brake. Ready to use it's about 8.5 lbs. With the brake it's not horrendous recoil but it's not the most pleasant either. I wouldn't wanna shoot it much at all without the brake.

I would like to build a short mag long range mountain rifle. I want a lighter gun without a muzzle brake. Brass availability is important to me. It will be used for deer and elk out to 1000 yrds, I prefer 7mm or bigger. My old faithful 300RUM is too heavy for long hikes. What caliber/load do you recommend?

This is always a fun topic . Seems like everyone wants a 6lb scoped rifle that'll kill elk out to 1000y. I think just be realistic . If your going out to 1000 yards , you don't want to be riding a bucking bronco so I'd say as light of a recoiling gun as you can get away with it be lethal at that distance. 7 saum /wsm / Sherman short or max. My first thought though was a 6.5prc. But that's not enough for elk at those distances. I have a 300 wsm right in front of me coming in at 9 lbs scoped shooting 163 pva Cayugas at 3000 FPS with a muzz break. Pretty **** salty set up with a 20" barrel . It's not an ultralight but it's light and packs a punch and it's very shootable. I'm thinking if you want elk out to 1000 , better off sacrificing a pound and going up to a larger rifle.

I recently built a 284 Win on a long action with long freebore and will shoot 180's @ 2830 out of a 26". Hits 12" plate at 1000 with authority but I'm unlikely to attempt an ethical kill shot on deer or elk at that distance.

Thanks for the input. Great pics, nice looking gun. What barrel twist are you using for the 180 berger? Would my gunsmith need add some free bore to run 180 grain bergers in the 7SAUM to maintain case capacity? Is it possible to use a short action with 180 grain bergers?

I run 180s on my 7SAUM on a short action. I use an extended mag, and its a custom Stiller action with the extended mag opening. I seat them fairly far out and have little to no issues. 25" barrel on my rig. Here are the specs on my rifle. It is up there with the most accurate rifle I own.

I'm loading about 15 thousandths off the lands.

With the 180s I get roughly 2870fps running Retumbo in the mid range of my ladder tests with no pressure signs depending on load. At that velocity I usually have a couple of shots touching and one about 1/2" out on a three shot group at 200 yards. So it is shooting well under 1/2 MOA. The only thing I have that shoots better is my 338 Lapua which will cloverleaf every time at 200 (If I'm steady), but its a long heavy barrel and on a heavy chassis.

Recoil is next to nothing with the brake on. Probably not much more than my light weight 6.5 creed. I don't really notice a lot of difference without the brake. The front end may jump a bit more but its not hard on the shoulder at all.

7SAUM is a great choice. My only complaint is that it took a bit of tweaking to get it to feed well. Short fat cartridges with long VLD projectiles are a bit tricky to feed. Had to go center feed, two in the mag well and one in the chamber is all it will hold.

I shoot a 7SAUM w 180 Scenars at 2950. Defiance Deviant short w Bart 3 (1/2" shank) @26". Stunner.
