Oct 1st - Opening Day!

Was feeling good enough yesterday afternoon and was able to drive right up to the field. I saw a bunch of does and four bucks. One was a shooter, but just stayed out of bow range. That was the first day out for me this year. Our season in NC opened up the 10th of September.

I've harvested a lot of animals in my life, but I've never harvested a whitetail doe. I've also never shot anything from a tree stand. Today I achieved both of those things. First whitetail doe, with a bow, from a tree stand. Most kids in Oklahoma accomplish this before they get their drivers license, but I'm doing it at the ripe old age of 38! Check that one off the bucket list.

I get the impression that's a beautiful plot of land you've got there. I love that part of the country. Congrats on you harvest!

Our elk / whitetail season starts in a week. North central Idaho by Dixie, Idaho.
Spent the day in the high country yesterday searching for camp spots. Weather forecast for opening is snow in the teens.
Basecamp is at 5500 elev. but we're hunting a ridge at 7200 ft. Only 32 miles from home. love the smell of the high country at this time of year. Winter is just a week away.
I prefer pistol hunting and pack a few Big Boys (.475 LB or .500 JRH), but I carry a .300 RSAUM in case that monster is beyond 80 yards.

Sitting here drinking cup of coffee O Dark 30 getting ready to hit woods for opening day bow here in MI. How did it get here so fast! Truck loaded, just need to drive hour to public land in IN where I prefer to hunt with bow. Since I have lifetime license, NBD. At 71, still have opening day "jitters" and nope not from coffee! When that stops, time to hang up bow!!!

Wish everyone a successful season whether you kill a deer or not! Just being in woods is successful for me! Be safe and PLEASE wear full body harness if in tree at all times.

I was the test dummy for my buddies tree harness. On the way down from 30 feet, one of those goofy steps with a nylon strap snapped and I went down about 3-4 feet and it arrested my fall, pronto. Glad my buddy witnessed me swinging in the breeze and completed a rescue to get my footing on the next step down. It was a campfire story with me swinging in the breeze and laughing for a bit. Wear 'em guys and gals...they work.

So I went hunting on the verge of getting another epidural shot in back. It was a little rough carrying stand and climbing tree but like I tell my wife "it's only pain" and I will not miss opening day. I had shot scheduled for this morning, went well and getting immediate relief. Usually takes 2-3 days for full impact but dang I feel better. So hopefully in few days can think about getting back in woods.

Here is how I prefer to hunt and hope I can keep using a climber for a while even at 71.

You got that right! sounds like a meteor hitting! Hickories are dropping like crazy, white oaks a little bit but regular oaks are really weak by me. Using green areas that have a lot of forbs as primary target where deer are hitting pretty good. At least from good old crap sign! Plus setting up on the usual travel corridors. Hope to be back in woods maybe Friday? Not sure yet but feel whole lot better even 5 hours after shot.

That is awesome! I truly believe a doe is a difficult trophy with bow especially when they get a little older. Who teaches bucks!
