156 EOL’s for Alberta Bear

Planning a trip to northern Alberta after bear. I'm wanting to take my 6.5 RPM. I have it loaded with Berger 156 EOL's traveling 3120 fps. Anyone see any problems with that?

No. It's a weatherby 6.5 RPM built on a 700 action with a 25" Hart barrel.

Your muzzle-velocity number is pretty high, compared to what Weatherby advertises here for lighter bullets. I load the same 156-grain EOL bullet to 3,035 fps in a 26" (fast twist) 264 Win Mag, which has the same 81.5-grain case capacity (compare https://weatherby.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/6.5WBYRPM_Data.pdf and https://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_case_capacity.htm). No problem with the bullet/cartridge for (black) bear, but I'd be worried your peak chamber pressure is north of 65,000 psi.

We have tested this load. We are using LRT which tends to give a little relief on pressure similar to retumbo

My thoughts on picking the "right" bullet are not when the bullet goes where you want it to, it is when it doesn't. Any bullet shot through both lungs will always kill, but what about if you hit too far forward, or back, etc.

I would not hunt bear with Berger's- refer to above why. I would pick a bullet that will always penetrate, retain 80% of its weight, etc.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware of LRT, and I just ordered some. Can't wait to try it out. Sounds like a really great powder for long-for-caliber magnum loads!

I have the complete opposite opinion. A bullet that will fragment ( berger) will save your arse if you hit them not perfect. Trust me!

Hard to argue a fist size wound channel, but that's the beauty of 2021 - so many bullet choices to choose from!
