Small Rifle Midway

No. Are you?
Yes, Yes I am, This is how you can tell people who speak on what they don't know. Have you ever researched the cost of specialized packaging for shipping Hazmat? Have you ever researched what it cost to get people certified to ship Hazmat? How about paying someone for the responsibility of getting it right? All of these things are factored into the cost of your Hazmat shipment, it's not just the surcharge from carriers. You make the money on the product, not the surcharge.

Good for you. Guess Graf's is losing $10.00 per shipment on hazmat along with losing about $11.00 on shipping as well as $10.00 or so on the product. Larry can charged what he wants, I'll shop where I want.

Pointing out the obvious is not difficult.

Forgot to add the last time I bought primers from Larry the box contained the item along with some bubble wrap on top. Must not be too hazardous for all concerned.

They probably are, but these two businesses don't operate in the same fashion. I haven't seen anything in stock at Graf's in quite a while. There are complexities in each business and even with shipping carriers. Cost depends on carrier, I sent 30 Berger bullets to AZ last week and it cost me $20. Tiny box, but to AZ it was expensive.
Moral of the story is that you shouldn't speak on things you don't understand. Midway ships things faster than Graf's ever has, at least to me, and with everything, speed cost money.

I understand. Perfectly.

So you think we should give a pass to vendors that pass their inefficiencies/lack of knowledge onto the customer? In your case, USPS and UPS both now off flat rate shipping. A simple google search would have saved $10 on your package. UPS calls it simple rate and you don't need a special box. Using code "easy" on ups is an additional discount. Shippo and pirate ship also have additional discounts.

How do you get "lack of knowledge" from my comment? Are you certified to ship hazmat by any chance? Having "lack of knowledge" = illegal shipments. None of them are lacking knowledge of Hazmat shipping, if they were they wouldn't be in business. DOT does not play around with Hazmat, and will fine you until your company is no longer viable.
When you live out where I live, you ship where you can ship, and pay what they charge. The first place you go is usually where you ship from. Hardly ever is that the postal office.

What you should do is understand the logistics behind getting you supplies that are described as Hazardous Materials. It takes certifications by a company, certifications of employees, and the responsibility always falls on the shipper. Get it wrong and you could face jail time, not just the company but the employee as well. All of these things cost money, and the cost of liability is high. Powder Valley does this as a specialty, so in theory it should cost them less to handle than say Midway, who offers it as an additional product. Powder Valley is also behind on shipments a little due to demand, but Midway has shipped everything in stock close to same day. I had to pay for shipping at both places, about the same price, but I've gotten my midway shipment a week before the PV stuff every time. It's nobody's fault, it's just being understanding of how things are different across different businesses, and how shipping hazmat adds complexity to a shipment of next to nothing. To a normal person it's "throw it in a box and send it", to the company it's more complex than that, and could include fines and jail.

You really think Midway is making that much on Hazmat? Just curious, are you Hazmat certified?
I am and yes, Midway makes the money as it is an individual upcharge used to train and ensure correct materials are in stock and maintain compliance with the Government laws. Delivery companies have their own upcharge as well.

Sorry. The big guy, midway, doesn't get a pass. They've raised their prices and maintained higher shipping and fees. I'm buying from grafs, Natchez, mid south etc. They may not get stuff in as often as midway but I'm fine waiting.
On the hazmat, we are not debating the overhead associated with hazmat. I don't have a hazmat cert but do have a healthy idea of what's involved. The people above pointed out that the median price for hazmat and shipping is well below midway, who should have the lowest overall cost as a lot of it is fixed costs. It's ok to defend why hazmat fees are in existence but don't defend why midway charges 50-100% more over their peers. The reason is the same reason they are charging 2x for some reloading components vs last year. People will pay it. That's not a permanent situation though.

For example a couple weeks ago I got some Tac from MSSS for 208 shipped. At midway it would have been 240.

Not sure where you are from...and that does matter, but I just shipped a rifle to AZ from Mo and it cost me 38.00 insured. I have sent 1000's of bullets via USPS for 9.00. you might want to shop around to save some money. Just some free advice.

Last time I got powder from Midway (a few 1lb containers) it was shipped in a single wall non-compliant box with some green air puff baggies and a sticker on the outside of the box. That was it.

I just received powder from 3rd gen and it was in the 'correct' weight cardboard, complete with the necessary hazmat stickers and shipping envelope and the powder was separated and cushioned. And it was shipped next day. 2 8lb containers of powder.

Cheaper than Midway, packaged correctly (Midway was not), and shipped fast.

Graf & Son may be slow, or short on items, but most company are presently. There prices seem to be well inline, and shipping costs are within line. I see outfits that want from $35 to over $100 for Hazmat charges. Over the years I have purchase lots of item from Graf. What I am wondering why are we not see any powder or primers showing up much of anywhere? I am on wish list all over the place.
