7-300 wins the 1100 yard match!

What kind of competition would you run it in? Straight prs? F class? I'm still not sure on the differences between all the different ones. Sorry for hijacking the thread also
Happy to help. Hit me up with a PM and I'll answer as much as I can so we don't derail the OP's thread

I I had a long action with a slower twist than Sierra recommends for the 183 but it did very well. I was in the 3.050" OAL neighborhood I believe and it was with a 29" tube.
My OAL is almost 3.0(2.980). My long action 284 shoots an OAL of 3.25. Don't see the need for the LA today as the SA gives me everything I need and I only run the 160-168 bullets.

To add something for the OP, to beat the 7mm you are currently shooting BC wise you would have to either go with one of the few higher BC 7mm projectiles out there or step up to a heavy 30 cal projectile or a 338. I don't believe these options will help you with what you are trying to accomplish at the ranges you are shooting and have a barrel that lasts. Personally I think 7mm is the sweet spot with high BC bullets and reasonable powder charges they will have less drift when the wind shows up (it will!!!) than the 6.5's or 30's. I think the answer for you is a more efficient cartridge and a heavier barrel. A longer barrel on a smaller 7 could get you back to where you are with speed and save on barrel life and generate less heat through the long shot strings. The 6.5's and 6's are great to shoot with their low recoil when the wind isn't blowing but they can't hang with a 7 when it does. And so no one thinks I'm a 7mm or bust guy I have multiple 6's, 6.5's and 30's..... and a lot of other calibers too, they all have their place.

I am pretty much set on the 284 or 284 shehane on a long action with a 28" heavy Bartlein 8 twist and a brake...I'm a 7mm whore, and no 6mm or 6.5mm is going to outdo a 180g ELDM at 2900fps with 3500-4000 rounds of barrel life with the new Bartlein stainless material coming out!! It will burn 15g less than my 7-300, should be more accurate, smaller ES and just plain shoot. Thanks for the help guys! I totally skipped the 284 until you guys brought it up, it gets lost in the mainstream these days...Where I live in Oregon, the wind always fuckin blows at least 10mph. A lot of days its 20-25mph...So I need something to buck the wind because like I said, I'm not a master wind caller. But I get what you're saying about the Indian and the arrow. I'm a decent shot, so I'll take all the ballistic advantage I can in my favor since my wind call skills are lacking...

Well I ended up taking 1st place in the shoot! It was in 4 different stages from 200-1100 yards. Was a dang good time with a bunch of great guys. Definitely be doing it again. I do think I need a different caliber though, 7-10 shot strings in 3 and 4 minutes on a 7-300 win mag gets the barrel SMOKING HOT, literally could smell the steel, and fry bacon and eggs on my barrel... I bet my throat didnt like it much either. But the heavy 9 twist Bartlein just kept drilling! So now I'm contemplating what to build for these type shoots...Cause at this rate my 7-300 will be toast in a year haha. But I tell you what, those 180g ELDMs at 3000fps sure sliced through the little wind that we had. I did not touch my windage once, which was pretty cool, because all the 6.5 CM guys were putting 2-3 MOA at 1000-1100 lol. 2nd place was a 2 way tie, and I only beat them by 2 hits, I believe both were shooting 6.5 CMs.

The 180 eld is my all time favorite bullet. I shoot it in two 7mm Rem mags & an STW. The stw pushes it to around 3180. No worries about the wind. Even at 2800 fps the 180 eld beats the 6.5 147 eld @ 3150 out of my saum as far as the wind is concerned. Great job. Awesome rifle you've got.

If your just playing and not seriously needing something for 1500-2000 yards where hitting the plate for points is important, the 7 heavies gets the nod. If your looking for a serious bullet in wind, you'll need to go into the real heavy 30 caliber or better yet 338 heavies. I shot the heavy 7s but when I stepped into the 338 LM Improved with 275-300s, it's night and day. Same BCs even and still the heavier bullets rang the steel plates more consistent than the equal BC 7mm bullets on windy days.

There is a reason 1000yd F-Class is dominated by 284s. A smattering of Shehanes, 7mmWSMs. This is the sweet spot in wind drift, recoil, and barrel life. I went through all of this myself in deciding to go with a straight 284.

Now that's target shooting. This is a LRH site. At those distances I shoot 338 Edge ;)

I need something that still has great wind bucking ability, but doesnt get smoking hot for 10 shot strings. Not a huge fan of the 6.5 CM but honestly thinking it may be it...Unless you guys can think of something better?? No wildcats, unless it's a simple neck up or down job. I'm not into sitting at the bench all day or fire forming crap.
what kind of shoot was this? A prs style?
284/7 saum/7mm saw/7-08ai
Since u like the 7mms
6.5cm is a good cartridge
6.5x47 is a touch slower but a good cartridge.
I've considered getting into the 7saw for prs matches, but decided to drop into the 6br cases instead
I have a 7rem mag, 28" tube, launch 180s at 3050 and the 197smk at 2920. For consistent wind bucking, nothing is like that big 197, it's an amazing bullet
