Has the 30-06 died along with the .308 ???

Weighs just under 7 1/2lbs unloaded. It favors 165s over H4831. Built on a Steyr made Mauser '98 with a Shilen #3 CM bbl finished @24"

The animal doesn't know its been hit by some new trendy over hyped CM or new Nosler cartridge or an old tried, tested & trusted one!

As the saying goes "if it aint broke then dont fix it" but someone in marketing didnt get that memo :p

We could have easily done without all these new cartridges but I guess its keeping someone in a job........................................

My number 1 recommendation for new hunters buying a rifle is a .308. Its polite, inexpensive to shoot, and is very effective for MANY hunting conditions. I'm not as much of a 06 fan because its kind of a pretender -not really a magnum but more than a 308.
Its good to have options and we are seeing a bunch of boutique cartridges offered recently. I'm not sold on the idea that the new stuff is really better(except bullets and barrels). My basic belief is that the brass mostly just holds powder and there maybe some efficiencies in design, but capacity rules the roost. So, the biggest advancement is the faster twist barrels and bullet design. Cartridges not so much.

A 30-06 is what I bought when I decided I wanted more than a 22-250 for deer. I wasnt especially excited about the cartridge but thought may as well have an 06 in the closet. It has been my main rifle for 10+ years. It looks like it too. It works, it shoots 1/2moa, it kills deer. I've carried it for elk and would have felt good taking a shot if one presented it's self. I use Berger 175 hunting VLDs with a mid range load of H4350 and winchester primers and Lapua brass.

30-06 sure isn't sexy, but it checks lots of boxes.

SAAMI max for the 30-06 is 60kpsi, same with the .280 rem

For cartridges like the .308 win, 270 win and .280AI for example, the SAAMI max is 65kpsi.

In the case of the former, this puts factory ammo at a bit of a disadvantage - if a handloader is prepared to load a 30-06 to 65kpsi, there is definitely some performance on the table, beyond what some reloading manuals deem 'maximum'.

I've had a 3006 for over 25 years it was my first centerfire big game rifle I purchased nothing fancy just an old Winchester model 70 with a 24 inch barrel I call it my meat stick because it has been killing animals for like I said over 25 years and never let me down yet

56.5-57.0 grains H4350 with a 168 Grain TTSX & about .030 off of lands. I have tried this combo in ABOUT 15 rifles new and old and have only had 2 or 3 that didn't love it. 2700-2875FPS depending on rifle but I ALWAYS start here with any 30-06 hunting rifle that's either mine or one that someone wants me to load for. I have seen plenty of Bull Elk killed quite cleanly out to 400 yards with this combo. 56.3-56.7 seems to really be the sweet spot in most guns I've tried....
