I haven't done any hog hunting myself, but I have a bunch of cousins in Arkansas that do it a lot. They hunt with dogs and move fast. A lot of them use 30-30 lever actions. They're light weight and cycle fast. Those guys probably don't use a lot of high-tech gear, but they put down a lot of meat. I'd like to go hunting with them but don't know if I can keep up.

depending on the range and hunting situation...
within a 100 yards driven hunts = semi auto 12 guage shotgun slugs
longer distances and over bait = any classic rifle callibre, 30-06 - 7mm Rem mag...

lm not really interested in the all new fancy stuff that are forgoten after a few years.
give me a 9.3x62mm Mauser - 270win - 30-06 - 300 win mag - 7mm rem mag - 8mm Mauser over any new fancy thing :D

And gun wise, any old german classical looking wallnut bolt rifle will do, thank you

Hard to beat these two...last night and tonight...

My first 358 win was a Ruger 77 old tang safety model re-barrelled from 308 to 358 and I would go to friends and my brother in Texas and kill the heck out of them porkers with that 358 win 200 gr Hornady's.We ran into some super hogs that were bigger than the ones on public land and I used 250 gr Hornady's and NONE could take a good hit and still stand.
Now I have a BLR in 358 win and it too has taken many hogs, deer and bears.
I still have a 45/70 Marlin that puts the hurt on them as well.
Looks like I'm not the only one who likes the good ole 358 win.Th

So I'm getting my hog hunting rigs set up for this year and I was curious to see what everyone else uses?

I myself use a Marlin 45-70 and .45 Colt cowboy rifle. For more serious hunts I like to use my 6.5 Grendel but I'm going to be selling that off soon for a bolt action. Not because the round isn't capable, just because I miss the action of a Rem 700.

Whatever is in my hands when the pigs show up

No you are not. Probably the best thing to come out of the 308 family.

My newest 358 Winchester, Model 700 built by Ray Montgomery out of Colorado.

Older Rem 700 SA no-prefix action Action face and bolt face trued and blued by Ray
Kampfield treated bolt with Ti fluting and lightening
Shilen #4 SS 1 in 12" twist barrel cut to 18.5" with protected crown, bead blasted, .695" muzzle diameter. 1" shank from action face
Factory Walker trigger reworked by member from 24hr Campfire to 3-1/4 lbs
McMillan Compact stock 60% purple, 20% tan, 20% gray - 13.5" LOP, 1" decelerator, factory alum pillars and PT&G ADL trigger guard
Leupold VX-3 2.5 - 8 x 36mm scope in a DNZ Game Reaper 1" extra low mount
4 rds of factory Hornady Custom 200gr SP Interlock @ 100yds

I have taken it hunting a couple of times but the pigs have not been cooperative, just a matter of time.

Ive gone down to Texas for the last 4 years on hunts and our group has used everything from slugs, 243, 30-06, 458 socom, and everything in between.

Personally I run a 458 Socom with hornadu 325gr ftx bullets. I am having a 45 raptor built to run for next years trip.

I wanted an excuse to build my own rifle just to see if I could do it so I built a rem 700 with a 21 inch remage barrel in 35 whelen. I wanted to take it up a notch from 358 win. Contemplated 350 rem mag but even reloading was expensive much less finding factory ammo. Surprisingly, it didn't blow up in my face.

Just got this rifle online a couple weeks ago...6.5 Grendel 16" SS M4 profile barrel, ASA left side charge upper, Rebel Silencer SOS Hunter, Osprey piston system with a ATN 4K 3x15 Day/Night scope sitting on top. Palmetto lower with a chassis trigger...

Not happy real happy with this rig. Once the can goes on accuracy is not nearly as good without it. Then the fact the left side charge upper has no cover over the slot, you get a face full of gas and burnt powder with the can in place!

But it makes dead pigs. Passed on two 125lbers to take this little pit pig! Sure was good too!
